EVOLUTION IN NUMBER OF SEATS OF IITS

IITs, or Indian Institutes of Technology, are a group of premier engineering and technology institutions in India. These institutions are known for their rigorous academic programs, excellent facilities and world-class faculty. Over the years, IITs have produced some of the most successful engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs in the world, making them a sought-after destination for students looking to pursue a career in technology and engineering.

In recent years, however, there have been calls for changes to the reservation policy at these institutes. The current policy sets aside a certain percentage of seats for underrepresented groups such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. The policy is aimed at promoting access to education for all and to create a more equal and fair society. However, some argue that the current policy is not working as intended and that changes are needed to make the IITs more inclusive and representative of Indian society.

One proposal that has been made is to increase the percentage of seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Currently, these groups are allotted 15% and 7.5% of seats, respectively, but some have argued that these percentages should be increased to better reflect their representation in the population. They point out that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up over 25% of the population, yet they are only allotted 22.5% of seats at IITs. Increasing the reservation percentage would help to ensure that these groups are better represented at the institutes.

Another proposal is to implement an “economically weaker section” quota, which would reserve a certain percentage of seats for students from low-income families, regardless of their caste or tribe. This would help to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds have a better chance of attending an IIT, regardless of their caste or tribe. Many argue that there is a gap of access to education between the poor and the rich, and this quota would help in bridging that gap.

There have also been calls to change the way in which the reservation policy is implemented. For example, some have suggested that instead of reserving a certain percentage of seats for certain groups, IITs should give a certain percentage of students a fee waiver or other financial assistance. This would help to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds have access to an IIT education, without affecting the general merit of the student body. This way even if the student is not able to secure a seat in the reserved category, he/she still has a chance to access the institute via financial assistance.

It’s important to remember that the goal of any such policy is to promote access to education for all and to create a more equal and fair society. However, the reservation policies are often surrounded by controversy, with some arguing that they are necessary to address historical injustices and ensure that underrepresented groups have access to education, and others arguing that they lower the overall quality of the student body and that other methods, such as increasing financial aid, would be more effective.

It’s ultimately up to the government and the institutes themselves to decide whether and how to change the reservation policy at IITs. But it’s clear that this is an important issue that requires careful consideration and dialogue among all stakeholders. The IITs are considered as the most prestigious institutes of technology in India and it is imperative that the policies are devised in a way that provides opportunities to all sections of society while maintaining the high academic standards and intellectual rigor. The government can consider suggestions like increasing the percentage of reservation, implementing ‘economically weaker section’ quota, providing financial assistance and so on and come up with a comprehensive policy that would help to make the IITs more inclusive.

Incorporating reservation in seats calls for increasing the seats in IITs so that general students don’t get deprived of their opportunities .so government had also increased their seats in IITs keeping in mind the opportunities for general students passing by these currently IITs have around sixteen thousand seats.
