IIT Guwahati, an Indian government-founded public technical institution, is situated in the Amingaon neighborhood of North Guwahati City, in the Indian state of Assam. It is India’s sixth Indian Institute of Technology to be founded there. The Indian government formally recognizes IIT Guwahati as an Institute of National Importance. According to the NIRF India Rankings 2021, IIT Guwahati is placed eighth overall and seventh in the engineering category.
The history of IIT Guwahati
The All-Assam Students Union and the Government of India signed the Assam Accord in 1985, which calls for an upgrade in Assam’s educational infrastructure in general and the establishment of an IIT. A parliamentary act established IIT Guwahati in 1994, and its academic program got underway in 1995. In 1995, IIT Guwahati accepted its first group of applicants for its Bachelor of Technology program. The Joint Entrance Examination served as the method of selection, much like at the other IITs. Through the GATE, the first group of applicants for the Master of Technology degree was approved in 1998.

The campus and its geography
The North Guwahati settlement of Amingaon is adjacent to the IIT Guwahati campus, which is located on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra. It is frequently cited as India’s most stunning campus. The college is located on a 700-acre of land about 20 kilometers from the city’s center. On one side is the Brahmaputra, and on the other are hills and a lot of open lands. The campus of IIT Guwahati is entirely residential. On-campus dorms are home to all the students. Manas, Dihing, Kapili, Siang, Kameng, Barak, Subansiri (girls’ hostel), Umiam, Dibang, Brahmaputra (largest hostel in all IITs, Dhansiri (new girls’ hostel), Lohit and Disang (new boys’ hostel), are just a few of the hostels that bear the names of rivers and tributaries in North-East India.
In addition to these, a hostel is also available for married postgraduates. At IIT Guwahati, each student has their room. Every room is furnished with the essentials. The restrooms and toilets are communal (three of each for every ten rooms on average). A mess, a canteen, a juice bar, a stationery store, a library, a TV room, a sports room (for indoor sports), and laundry facilities are amenities found in every hostel. The hostels have access to the Internet around-the-clock. Every resident receives a single room in the boys’ hostels, which are single-seated.
The campus infrastructure
The lecture halls or smaller classrooms scattered throughout the academic complex are where classes are held. The several departments each have their instructional laboratories. The best facilities for their classroom lectures as well as research have been provided by a sizable six-story classroom complex and a research facility with all current amenities. The Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library, one of the Institute’s key facilities, provides access to the most recent knowledge in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, and sciences. Being a significant central service point, it creates cutting-edge facilities and offers cutting-edge services to the academic community, providing all required supports for teaching, learning, and research operations of the Institute.
The Sports Complex, which includes a gym with the Students Gymkhana office, an indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis, and squash courts, a 50-meter swimming pool with 8 lanes, and flood-lit playing fields for all the major outdoor games, offers plenty of recreational opportunities for the campus’s residents. The residential portion of the infrastructure consists of two well-equipped guest houses, roomy professor and staff quarters, married students’ flat-lets, eleven men’s hostels, and two women’s hostels with single occupancy rooms. The Institute also contains three community halls, numerous cafeterias, a hospital with 30 beds, a commercial complex with a restaurant and several shops, and a food court with a variety of food stalls and cuisines.
Placements at IIT:Guwahati
Students at IIT Guwahati receive job offers from organizations like Flipkart, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Adobe. The institute just began its recruitment drive for 2022. The largest compensation package to date is INR 2.5 CPA. 38 recruiters were actively involved in the placement drive on Day 2 and made 530 placement offers. To date, 179 pre-placement offers have been made to students.
Additionally, the School of Business at IIT Guwahati has opened its doors to provide a full-time residential MBA program. The opening of the cutting-edge Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) and Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) in November 2021, which will aid students in concentrating on developments in multidisciplinary and scientific research, is another recent development at the institute.
The life of a student at IIT-Guwahati
The management and students of IIT Guwahati collaborate each year to plan several festivals and competitions. Alcheringa, an annual cultural festival, Techniche, an annual techno-management festival, Udgam, an annual entrepreneurship summit, and Research Conclave are some of the notable festivals. In addition to this, IIT Guwahati students take part in the yearly Inter IIT Sports Meet. In addition to these, the General Championship (GC) is a major event for the hostel communities at the university.
