Question
A flask contains a mixture of isohexane and 3-methylpentane. One of the liquids boils at 63°C while the other boils at 60°C. What is the best way to separate the two liquids and which one will be distilled out first?
Select the correct option:
A
Simple distillation, isohexane
B
Fractional distillation, isohexane
C
Simple distillation, 3-methylpentane
D
Fractional distillation, 3-methylpentane
✓ Correct! Well done.
✗ Incorrect. Try again or view the solution.
Solution
Two volatile liquids having their boiling points close to each other can be separated by fractional distillation. Out of the two given liquids, isohexane has lower boiling point and hence will distill out first.
