A solution containing 62 g ethylene glycol in 250 g water is cooled to $-10^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$. If $\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{f}}$ for water is $1.86 \mathrm{Kkg} \mathrm{mol}^{-1}$, the amount of water (in g ) separated as ice is
Select the correct option:
A
64
B
32
C
16
D
48
✓ Correct! Well done.
✗ Incorrect. Try again or view the solution.
Solution
$$
\begin{aligned}
& \Delta T_f=K_f \times m \\
& \Rightarrow 10=1.86 \times \frac{62 \times 1000}{62 \times w_A} \\
& \Rightarrow \quad w_A=\frac{1.86 \times 1000}{10}=186 \mathrm{~g}
\end{aligned}
$$
Given amount of $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}$ is 250 g
∴ The amount of water separated as ice
$$
=250-186=64 \mathrm{~g}
$$
