Major Change Alert for 2026

For the first time ever, VITEEE 2026 has introduced negative marking. Earlier this exam ran without any negative marking. Now every wrong answer costs minus 1 mark. This means the old "attempt everything" strategy will no longer work, and accuracy matters more than raw speed.

Introduction to VITEEE 2026

The Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination, popularly known as VITEEE, is one of India's premier private engineering entrance exams. It is mandatory for admission to BTech programmes across all VIT campuses (Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal and Amaravati). VIT has announced the revised VITEEE 2026 exam pattern on viteee.vit.ac.in, and this year brings a major change that affects your preparation strategy at a fundamental level.

The biggest update: VITEEE 2026 has introduced negative marking for the first time. This means the "attempt every question" strategy from previous years will no longer work. Accuracy now matters far more than before, and smart, selective attempts are the key to a high VITEEE rank.

BPCEABio-related BTech only (Biotech, Biomedical, Bioengineering, Health Informatics)Biology + Physics + Chemistry + English + Aptitude
Stream Selection: The MPCEA stream is eligible for all BTech programmes. Candidates with a PCM combination attempt this stream. The BPCEA stream is valid only for bio-related BTech programmes. If you want core engineering branches such as CSE or Mechanical, select MPCEA.
Major 2026 Update

New Marking Scheme: The 2026 Game Changer

This is the most important change VIT has made this year. Earlier VITEEE ran without negative marking, but from 2026 a new marking scheme applies.

OutcomeMarks (Old, before 2026)Marks (NEW for 2026)
Correct Answer+1+4 marks
Incorrect Answer0 (no penalty)minus 1 mark
Unattempted Question00 marks (no penalty)
Total Marks125500 marks
Net Impact: One wrong answer is effectively a 5-mark swing (4 lost + 1 negative). Earlier a wrong answer was free. Now every attempt must be made carefully.

Strategy Shift: How to Tackle Negative Marking

Old Strategy (Don't Do)

Attempt all questions blindly, even with random guesses. The goal was maximum attempts.

New 2026 Strategy

Selective attempts only when 60%+ confident. Skip pure guesses. Concept-based eliminations are encouraged.

Risk-Reward Math

Right = +4, Wrong = minus 1. So you need 1 right to offset 4 wrongs. Better to skip if unsure.

  • Random guessing is now a risky deal; every wrong answer directly hits your marks.
  • Complete concept-clear questions first, then move on to those needing intelligent elimination.
  • The English and Aptitude sections are short (just 15 questions combined) but offer a strong scoring opportunity, so do not ignore them.
  • The Mathematics / Biology section is the largest (40 questions) and worth 160 marks, so your preparation strength counts the most here.
  • Practising mock tests with the new marking scheme is essential, because old mock tests will feel different from the actual exam.

Preparation Strategy Based on the Pattern

Time Distribution (150 minutes total)

  • Maths or Biology (60 minutes): 40 questions, 1.5 minutes each. The maximum weightage section.
  • Physics (50 minutes): 35 questions, 1.4 minutes each.
  • Chemistry (35 minutes): 35 questions, 1 minute each. NCERT-direct facts speed you up here.
  • English + Aptitude (15 minutes): 15 questions combined, the easiest section. Quick wins.
  • Buffer (10 minutes): Review marked questions and decide on borderline attempts carefully.

Question Selection Filter

  • 100% confident: Attempt without thinking twice.
  • 60 to 80% confident: Attempt only after eliminating at least 1 to 2 wrong options.
  • 40 to 60% confident: Skip generally; attempt only if you can eliminate 2+ options.
  • Less than 40% confident: Always skip. Negative marking will hurt your score.

Other Important Points

  • The exam is conducted strictly in English; there is no regional language option available.
  • A candidate can attempt VITEEE only once; there is no facility for multiple attempts.
  • Scoring zero in the exam means "Not qualified", and you will not be eligible to participate in counselling.
  • VITEEE's difficulty level is slightly lower than JEE Main, but the time pressure is intense.
  • Slot booking happens in advance. Choose your preferred date and centre wisely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. VITEEE 2026 is the first year where negative marking has been introduced. Earlier (until 2025), there was no penalty for wrong answers. Now every wrong answer costs minus 1 mark, while every correct answer gives +4 marks.
Only one attempt per year. Unlike JEE Main (which has 2 sessions) or BITSAT (which has 2 sessions), VITEEE allows only a single attempt per academic cycle. Choose your slot date carefully.
Yes. VITEEE is conducted strictly in English language only. There is no Hindi or regional language option. Candidates must be comfortable with technical English to clearly understand questions.
MPCEA stream covers Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry + English + Aptitude, and qualifies for ALL BTech programmes at VIT. BPCEA replaces Maths with Biology, and is valid only for bio-related BTech programmes (Biotechnology, Biomedical, Bioengineering, Health Informatics).
No. VITEEE difficulty is generally lower than JEE Main, but the time pressure is intense (1.2 minutes per question vs 2.4 in JEE Main). With negative marking now added in 2026, accuracy becomes equally important as in JEE Main.
Class 12 with PCM or PCB combination from a recognised board. Minimum 60% aggregate in PCM/PCB (relaxation for Tamil Nadu and J&K candidates). Indian and NRI candidates are both eligible.
VITEEE is conducted at multiple test centres across India and abroad. You select your preferred centre during registration. Counselling for all VIT campuses (Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal, Amaravati) is centralised based on VITEEE rank.
