Introduction to BITSAT 2026

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) is the entry gateway to BITS Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai campuses for integrated first-degree programmes. BITS Pilani has published the detailed BITSAT 2026 brochure at admissions.bits-pilani.ac.in. The exam is known for its unique style: speed-based, accuracy-driven, and with a special twist in the form of bonus questions.

The most interesting feature of BITSAT is this: if a candidate finishes all 130 main questions before time runs out, they get the option to attempt 12 additional bonus questions. This risk-reward system is what sets BITSAT apart from every other engineering entrance exam in India.

BITSAT is conducted in English only. Unlike JEE Main which offers 13 languages, BITSAT has no Hindi or regional language option. The exam covers Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (or Biology for B.Pharm), English Proficiency, and Logical Reasoning. The syllabus is based entirely on NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks.

Bonus Questions: The Extra Opportunity

BITSAT's bonus question feature is an extra opportunity for top scorers

SubjectBonus QuestionsBonus Marks (max)
Physics39
Chemistry39
Mathematics OR Biology39
Logical Reasoning39
Total Bonus Possible1236
Critical Rule: Once you decide to attempt bonus questions, you lose the ability to go back and revisit the main 130 questions. This means any wrong-but-correctable answer in the main paper cannot be fixed. Decide carefully before entering the bonus section.

Marking Rules and Strategy Points

OutcomeMarksImpact per Question
Correct Answer+3Direct gain
Incorrect Answer-14-mark swing vs correct
Unattempted0No risk
Multiple SelectionsNot allowedSystem rejects
Strategy Math: Skipping a question is safer when you are less than 60% confident. Reason: 1 wrong answer (-1) effectively cancels out the gain from 1 correct guess. The net cost of a wrong answer is 4 marks (3 lost + 1 penalty). Better to skip and move to the next question.

Preparation Strategy Based on Pattern

Time Allocation (180 minutes total)

  • English + LR (30 questions, 25 minutes): Easiest section. Attempt first to build confidence and bank quick marks.
  • Chemistry (30 questions, 35 minutes): NCERT-direct facts. Quick recall based.
  • Physics (30 questions, 50 minutes): Formula-based questions. Attempt sure-shots first.
  • Mathematics (40 questions, 60 minutes): Most calculation-heavy. Reserve maximum time.
  • Buffer (10 minutes): Review marked questions. Decide on bonus attempt.

Bonus Question Decision Tree

  • Attempt bonus only if: You completed 130 main questions with 110+ confident attempts AND 20+ minutes remaining.
  • Avoid bonus if: You are at 100 to 105 attempts, or unsure about revisiting marked questions.
  • Why? Once bonus starts, no going back to the main 130. The opportunity cost of one wrong-but-correctable answer in the main paper is permanently lost.

Important Things to Remember

  • Class 12 board exam minimum 75% marks (PCM/PCB combined) is required. BITSAT score alone does not guarantee admission.
  • Class 12 board top scorers in individual subjects may receive direct BITS admission (subject to terms and conditions).
  • One session's score does not carry forward to the next session. Each session is an independent attempt.
  • BITSAT difficulty level is moderate overall, but time pressure is intense. Speed practice is mandatory.
  • BITSAT is conducted only in English. There is no Hindi or regional language option.
  • No calculators, log tables, or formula sheets are allowed. On-screen virtual calculator is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

BITSAT 2026 has two sessions: Session 1 from 15 to 17 April 2026, and Session 2 from 24 to 26 May 2026. Each session is 3 hours long, conducted in Computer-Based Test mode, in English only.
Yes. You can attempt both Session 1 and Session 2 by paying the application fee separately for each. Your higher score will be considered for admission. Each session is treated as an independent attempt.
Only if you finish all 130 main questions with high confidence and have 20+ minutes remaining. Once bonus starts, you cannot go back to revisit the main 130. The +3 reward per bonus question becomes risky if it costs you a confident review of the main paper.
For BITS Pilani CSE: 300+ marks. For BITS Goa CSE: 274+. For BITS Hyderabad CSE: 270+. These are based on 2025-26 cutoffs and may vary by 5 to 15 marks each year.
No. The full 3 hours can be distributed among all 4 sections as per your strategy. There is no sectional lock. This gives you flexibility to spend more time on Mathematics if needed.
BITSAT difficulty is generally lower than JEE Main, especially in Mathematics. However, BITSAT requires much higher speed (1.4 minutes per question vs 2.4 in JEE Main). Additionally, BITSAT has English and Logical Reasoning sections that JEE Main does not have.
BITSAT is conducted in English only. There is no Hindi or regional language option. This is unlike JEE Main which offers 13 languages. Ensure your English comprehension skills are exam-ready.
In Physics: Mechanics (especially Work-Energy and Rotation) and Electrostatics/Current Electricity together make up 50%+ of the paper. In Chemistry: Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry cover 65%+. In Maths: Calculus and Algebra account for 40%+. These core areas have been consistent across the last 5 years.
