Question
Two plane polarized light waves combine at a certain point whose electric field components are
${E_1} = {E_0}{\mathop{\rm Sin}\nolimits} \omega t$
${E_2} = {E_{\rm{o}}}{\mathop{\rm Sin}\nolimits} \left( {\omega {\rm{t}} + \frac{\pi }{3}} \right)$
Find the amplitude of the resultant wave.
Select the correct option:
A
$3.4{{\rm{E}}_0}$
B
$0.9{{\rm{E}}_0}$
C
${E_0}$
D
$1.7{{\rm{E}}_0}$
✓ Correct! Well done.
✗ Incorrect. Try again or view the solution.
Solution
${\rm{E}} = \sqrt {{{\left( {{{\rm{E}}_0}} \right)}^2} + {{\left( {{{\rm{E}}_0}} \right)}^2} + 2\left( {{{\rm{E}}_0}} \right)\left( {{{\rm{E}}_0}} \right)\cos \frac{\pi }{3}} $
${\rm{E}} = \sqrt {2{\rm{E}}_0^2 + {\rm{E}}_0^2} = \sqrt 3 {{\rm{E}}_0} = 1.73{{\rm{E}}_0}$
