Question
In the given circuit the internal resistance of the 18 V cells is negligible. If $\mathrm{R}_1=400 \Omega, \mathrm{R}_3=100 \Omega$ and $\mathrm{R}_4=500 \Omega$ and the reading of an ideal voltmeter across $\mathrm{R}_4$ is 5 V , then the value of $\mathrm{R}_2$ will be:

Select the correct option:
A
230 Ω
B
450 Ω
C
550 Ω
D
300 Ω
✓ Correct! Well done.
✗ Incorrect. Try again or view the solution.
Solution
$\begin{aligned} & I_1=\frac{5}{500}=0.01 \mathrm{~A} \\ & V_B-V_C=600 I_1=6 \mathrm{~V} \\ & \Rightarrow V_A-V_B=12 \mathrm{~V} \\ & \Rightarrow I_1+I_2=\frac{12}{400}=0.03 \mathrm{~A} \\ & \Rightarrow I_2=0.03-0.01=0.02 \mathrm{~A} \\ & \Rightarrow R_2=\frac{6}{.02}=300 \Omega\end{aligned}$
