The National Council of Educational Research and Training published a brand new Class 9 Science textbook in April 2026, titled Exploration: Textbook of Science for Grade 9. This replaces the old combined Class 9 Science book that students have been using for years. It is the first complete redesign of the Class 9 Science curriculum since NCERT's last major revision, and it is the direct result of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.
The title "Exploration" is not just a name — it reflects the entire philosophy of the book. Science is no longer presented as a fixed collection of facts to memorise. Instead, the book invites students to ask questions, observe carefully, build models, make predictions, and understand how scientific knowledge is actually constructed. The page numbers are framed with a magnifying glass and a compass — symbols chosen deliberately to represent careful observation and purposeful direction in learning.
The new book has 13 chapters, integrating Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science — a significant structural departure from the old book. Below are all chapters with the science area they cover:
Brand new introductory chapter on how science works — models, predictions, scientific language, estimation, and connecting science with maths and society.
Cell structure, cell theory, unicellular and multicellular organisms, cell organelles, Indian origin of life at Puga Valley hot springs.
Plant and animal tissues, types and functions, with updated examples and illustrations.
Motion, types of motion, distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, equations of motion, graphical treatment.
New standalone chapter on types of mixtures, pure substances, separation techniques. Was not a dedicated chapter in the old book.
Newton's laws of motion, inertia, momentum, action-reaction — with real-world Indian context examples throughout.
Work, power, energy, conservation of energy. Simple Machines newly added — lever, pulley, inclined plane — not in old Class 9 book.
Atomic models, discovery of subatomic particles, Bohr's model, electronic configuration — renamed and expanded from old Structure of the Atom chapter.
Atoms, molecules, atomic mass, mole concept, formula writing — combines and expands upon old Atoms and Molecules chapter.
Sound, wave properties, frequency, amplitude, speed, reflection of sound, echo, sonar, human ear — retitled from old Sound chapter.
Moved from Class 10 to Class 9. Covers asexual and sexual reproduction in plants and animals. Was not in old Class 9 book.
Biological classification systems, kingdoms, diversity of life — expanded treatment of classification, new to Class 9.
Completely new Earth Science chapter. Earth's spheres, energy flows, biogeochemical cycles, climate, interconnections between physical and living systems. Was never in old Class 9 book.
Here is a complete side-by-side comparison of what was in the old Class 9 Science book and how the new Exploration book is structured differently:
| Old Chapter | New Chapter / Status | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Did not exist | Ch 1: Exploration — Entering the World of Secondary Science | Brand New Intro chapter on how science works — models, scientific language, estimation, predictions |
| The Fundamental Unit of Life | Ch 2: Cell — The Building Block of Life | Expanded Deeper cell science with Indian research examples (Puga Valley, Birbal Sahni Institute) |
| Tissues | Ch 3: Tissues in Action | Updated Updated content and illustrations with activity-based approach |
| Motion | Ch 4: Describing Motion Around Us | Expanded Same core content, more real-world examples, mathematical reasoning focus |
| Is Matter Around Us Pure (partial) | Ch 5: Exploring Mixtures and Their Separation | New Standalone Now its own dedicated chapter — expanded coverage of separation techniques |
| Force and Laws of Motion | Ch 6: How Forces Affect Motion | Redesigned Newton's laws with stronger conceptual treatment and Indian context examples |
| Work and Energy | Ch 7: Work, Energy, and Simple Machines | Expanded Simple Machines (lever, pulley, inclined plane) newly added to this chapter |
| Structure of the Atom | Ch 8: Journey Inside the Atom | Expanded Atomic history and models treated more narratively and in greater depth |
| Atoms and Molecules | Ch 9: Atomic Foundations of Matter | Expanded Mole concept treated more rigorously — better JEE/NEET foundation |
| Sound | Ch 10: Sound Waves — Characteristics and Applications | Updated Applications expanded, wave properties treated more conceptually |
| Not in Class 9 (was Class 10) | Ch 11: Reproduction — How Life Continues | Moved Earlier Brought from Class 10 to Class 9. Students now learn reproduction one year earlier |
| Not in old Class 9 book | Ch 12: Patterns in Life — Diversity and Classification | New to Class 9 Classification system now introduced at Class 9 level |
| Not in old Class 9 book | Ch 13: Earth as a System — Energy, Matter, and Life | Brand New Earth Science introduced for the first time in Class 9 as a full chapter |
| Matter in Our Surroundings | Content distributed across Chs 5, 8, 9 | Restructured Not a standalone chapter — content spread more contextually across multiple chapters |
| Gravitation | Partially in Ch 6, details in advanced sections | Integrated Gravitational concepts woven into Forces chapter rather than a standalone chapter |
| Why Do We Fall Ill | Referenced in Earth as a System and Biology sections | Restructured Health and disease woven into broader biology context rather than standalone chapter |
| Natural Resources / Improvement in Food Resources | Ch 13: Earth as a System covers these themes | Integrated Embedded in the broader Earth Science systems chapter |
| Net result: Old book had 15 chapters. New book has 13 chapters — but each chapter is significantly deeper and broader than before. Earth Science is entirely new. Reproduction moves to Class 9 from Class 10. | ||
The biggest visible change in the new Exploration book is the introduction of 10 distinct pedagogical features embedded throughout every chapter. The old NCERT Class 9 Science book had standard activities and exercises. The new book has an entirely different structure:
Open-ended questions at the start of each chapter — often unanswerable immediately, designed to trigger curiosity and set the direction of enquiry.
Self-assessment questions after every section or sub-section. Encourages students to check understanding before moving forward.
Enrichment boxes with interesting facts, challenging ideas, and thought-provoking observations — like why the speed of light is called 'c' (from Latin 'celeritas').
Advanced concepts that go deeper than standard Class 9 level. Specifically designed for students who want to explore further or are targeting competitive exams.
Shows how science has solved real-world problems — improving health, protecting environment, advancing technology. Builds responsible citizenship thinking.
Highlights achievements of Indian scientists and institutions from ancient times to present — directly addresses NEP 2020's emphasis on Indian knowledge traditions.
Encourages students to modify experiments, try different approaches, and investigate further. Connects theory with real-world application through hands-on thinking.
Brief biographies of Indian and international scientists related to each chapter's topic — from Meghnad Saha to modern researchers. Makes science human and inspiring.
Activities and projects involving classmates, experts, teachers, parents, and community. Makes science a social and collaborative experience, not just a classroom subject.
Every unit has QR codes providing access to additional reading material, interactive resources, and digital content — students can explore at their own pace.
| # | What Changed | Old Book | New Book | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Earth Science added | Not present | Full chapter (Ch 13): Earth as a System | Students learn Earth's spheres, biogeochemical cycles and climate for the first time at Class 9 |
| 2 | Reproduction moved from Class 10 | Class 10 book | Ch 11: Reproduction in Class 9 | NEET aspirants build Biology base one year earlier. Class 10 Biology changes as a result. |
| 3 | Simple Machines newly added | No coverage at Class 9 | Added to Ch 7: Work, Energy and Simple Machines | Practical applications of Physics now included from Class 9 itself |
| 4 | Chapter 1 on scientific thinking | Jumped straight into content | Dedicated introductory chapter on how science works | Students understand scientific method, models, estimation and language before diving into subject content |
| 5 | Mixtures gets its own chapter | Part of "Is Matter Around Us Pure" | Standalone Ch 5 on Mixtures and Separation | Separation chemistry now gets full dedicated treatment — better Chemistry foundation |
| 6 | Integrated approach — no subject barriers | Chapters felt like separate Physics, Chemistry, Biology sections | All chapters blend multiple science disciplines | Students see connections across Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science naturally |
If you are in Class 9 and planning to appear for JEE or NEET, the new Exploration book is a significantly stronger foundation than the old Class 9 Science book. Here is what specifically helps:
| Subject Area | How the New Book Helps JEE/NEET Preparation |
|---|---|
| Physics (Chs 4, 6, 7, 10) | Motion, Forces, Work-Energy, and Sound now treated with greater mathematical rigour and conceptual depth. The "Ready to Go Beyond" sections push into territory that directly previews Class 11 Physics. |
| Chemistry (Chs 5, 8, 9) | Mole concept in Ch 9, Atomic Models in Ch 8, and Separation in Ch 5 now have dedicated space — not cramped into half-chapters. Better base for Class 11 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. |
| Biology (Chs 2, 3, 11, 12) | Reproduction (now in Class 9) and Classification give NEET aspirants a one-year head start on core NEET Biology chapters. NEET is 90% NCERT Biology — building these foundations early matters enormously. |
| Earth Science (Ch 13) | Environmental science concepts that appear in NEET and some JEE papers are now formally introduced in Class 9 instead of being scattered across board-only chapters. |
