NCERT New Syllabus 2025-26 Explained: New Books, Operation Sindoor Module, History Changes and What JEE and NEET Students Must Know Right Now

Updated April 2026  |  Based on Official NCERT Announcements

India's school education is going through its biggest overhaul in decades. The National Council of Educational Research and Training has been rolling out completely new textbooks and an updated syllabus in phases since 2024, and the changes go far beyond a few chapter deletions. New book names, new subjects from Class 6, an Operation Sindoor learning module, restructured history content, corrections in Class 11 and 12 science books, and a full redesign expected for Classes 9 to 12 by 2026-27.

If you are a student, a parent, or someone preparing for JEE or NEET, this blog covers everything that actually matters in one place so you know which edition to study from, what is removed, what is new, and what you need to pay attention to right now.

Why Is NCERT Changing the Syllabus?

The short answer is NEP 2020. The National Education Policy 2020 proposed a complete redesign of school education in India, and the National Curriculum Framework 2023 gave NCERT the detailed blueprint to act on. The old books had not been substantially updated in years, were heavily focused on memorisation, and did not reflect the skill-based, interdisciplinary learning approach that NEP 2020 targets.

The new curriculum pushes for critical thinking, competency-based questions, and practical knowledge. Around 30 percent of older non-essential and repetitive content has been removed across different classes. From 2026, board exams for Classes 10 and 12 will include 50 percent competency-based questions.

Three goals driving the new NCERT curriculum:
1. Content Reduction — roughly 30% of repetitive material removed across classes
2. Exam Alignment — 50% competency-based questions in CBSE boards from 2026 onwards
3. Competitive Accuracy — NEET and UPSC exams now use only the latest rationalized edition data and diagrams

The Phase-by-Phase Rollout: Which Classes Have Changed

Academic Year Classes With New Books Status Key Change
2024-25 Classes 1, 2, 3 and 6 Completed First batch of NEP-aligned books. Classes 3 and 6 saw the most significant changes including new book names and restructured content.
2025-26 Classes 4, 5, 7 and 8 Current Year Completely new books with new names. Vocational education added from Class 6. Operation Sindoor and Swadeshi modules added for all classes.
2026-27 Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 Upcoming Most critical for board exam and competitive exam students. New Class 11 and 12 books expected. JEE 2028 and NEET 2027 aspirants will be the first batch to face the new books.
Bridge courses have been introduced for Classes 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 to help students transition from old to new curriculum without gaps. NCERT has also launched an online Diploma in Teaching of Science for Class 6-8 teachers.
For JEE 2026, NEET 2026 and JEE 2027 students: Your current Class 11 and 12 NCERT textbooks remain the primary reference. The large-scale overhaul for Classes 11 and 12 is coming in 2026-27. However, specific corrections have been made to the existing Class 11 and 12 books for 2025-26 that directly affect competitive exam marks — covered in detail below.

New Book Names for Classes 5 to 8

If you have a younger sibling in Classes 5 to 8, they are now studying from books with completely different names and rewritten content. These are not updated editions of old books. They are entirely new books written from scratch under NCF 2023.

Class Subject New Book Name Old Book Name
Class 5EnglishSantoorMarigold
Class 5HindiVeenaRimjhim
Class 6EnglishPoorviHoneysuckle
Class 6ScienceCuriosityScience
Class 6Social ScienceExploring Society: India and BeyondHistory / Geography / Civics (3 separate books)
Class 8HindiMalharVasant
Class 8ScienceJigyasa / CuriosityScience
Class 8Social ScienceExploring Society: India and BeyondHistory / Geography / Civics (3 separate books)
Class 8VocationalKaushal BodhDid not exist earlier
Social Science is now a single integrated subject instead of three separate books. This is one of the most significant structural changes for younger classes under the NEP 2020 framework.

Operation Sindoor Module: New Addition for Classes 3 to 12

One of the most widely discussed additions to the NCERT curriculum in 2025 is the introduction of two special learning modules on Operation Sindoor for students from Class 3 to Class 12.

Classes Module Name Level
Classes 3 to 8Operation Sindoor: A Saga of ValourPreparatory and Middle
Classes 9 to 12Operation Sindoor: A Mission of Honour and BraverySecondary Level

Both modules describe the operation as a joint military effort and a patriotic commitment to safeguarding national peace, with reference to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. These are positioned as supplementary learning modules to build national awareness among school students.

Also added: Swadeshi Module. A Swadeshi module has been introduced for middle and secondary school students connecting Prime Minister Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to the historical Swadeshi movement. It encourages students to support Indian-made products and understand the link between self-reliance and national economic strength.

History Textbook Changes: What Was Removed and Restructured

What Has Been Removed or Changed

Certain chapters and references related to the Mughal period and the Delhi Sultanate have been removed or significantly restructured. The titles "Akbar the Great" and "Tipu Sultan the Great" have been dropped. NCERT stated that the revised curriculum will give more emphasis to India's ancient history, the contributions of tribal communities, and achievements of Indian scientists.

What Has Been Added

The Class 8 Social Science textbook Exploring Society: India and Beyond takes an integrated approach combining history, geography, governance, and economic life in a single subject. The content covers the period from the 13th to the mid-19th century in a multidisciplinary format aligned with NCF 2023.

Vocational Education From Class 6 — A Major Structural Shift

Vocational education is now introduced from Class 6 as a core compulsory subject, not an optional elective. The subject is called Kaushal Bodh and it is now part of the standard curriculum for Classes 6 and 8. Earlier, skill-based education was only available as an optional subject in Classes 9 and above.

Making it a compulsory core subject from Class 6 means millions of students now receive foundational exposure to practical skills and trades alongside their academic subjects from middle school onwards, which is one of the central goals of NEP 2020.

Class 11 and 12 Book Corrections for 2025-26 — Critical for NEET Students

While the major overhaul for Classes 11 and 12 is coming in 2026-27, NCERT has made specific factual corrections to the existing books for 2025-26 that directly affect NEET, where examiners use only the latest edition.

Subject Class Chapter What Changed Exam Impact
Biology Class 11 Photosynthesis ATP synthase diagram now shows 4 hydrogen ions — not 2 as in older editions NEET Critical
Biology Class 11 Cell: The Unit of Life Theodore Schwann description corrected. Semi-fluid matrix definition updated. NEET
Biology Class 12 Human Reproduction Figure 2.7 (ovary cross-section) now shows "secondary oocyte" instead of "ovum" NEET Critical
Chemistry Class 11 Hydrocarbons Melting point of Eicosane updated to the correct value JEE / NEET
Biology Class 11 and 12 Biotechnology chapters Minor grammatical corrections for conceptual clarity. No topic change. NEET
If your NCERT books were printed before 2024, they may carry the incorrect versions of these diagrams and facts. Download the latest PDFs from ncert.nic.in and check the reprint year on the preliminary pages of your book.
NEET 2026 students — this is the most important table in this blog for you. NEET Biology questions are based on exact diagrams and line-level facts in NCERT. If your book shows 2H+ in the ATP synthase diagram instead of 4H+, your answer will be marked wrong. If your ovary cross-section shows "ovum" instead of "secondary oocyte," that too can cost a question. Use only the corrected 2024 or 2025 edition.

What Is Coming in 2026-27: The Big Change for Classes 9 to 12

The 2026-27 academic session is when the most consequential change for senior secondary students arrives. NCERT plans to introduce completely redesigned textbooks for Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12. This will be the first time Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics books have been substantially redesigned since the rationalisation in 2023.

Who will be affected first: Students entering Class 11 in 2026-27 — those currently in Class 10 in 2025-26. These students will appear for JEE 2028 and NEET 2027. If you are currently in Class 11 or 12, your books will not change mid-preparation. Watch for official NCERT and NTA announcements as the 2026-27 session approaches.

Practical Action for Students Right Now

JEE 2026 and JEE 2027 Aspirants

Your Class 11 and 12 syllabus has not changed for 2025-26. The Chemistry Hydrocarbons correction (Eicosane melting point) is minor but worth verifying by checking the latest edition. Focus on your preparation without worrying about the 2026-27 new books — you will appear before they take effect.

NEET 2026 Aspirants

Verify immediately that your NCERT Biology books are the corrected 2024 or 2025 reprints. Check the Photosynthesis chapter for 4H+ in the ATP synthase diagram. Check the Class 12 Human Reproduction chapter for "secondary oocyte" in Figure 2.7. If your book shows the old values, download the corrected PDFs from ncert.nic.in before your next revision session.

Students Currently in Class 9 or 10

Your current books remain the same for 2025-26. New Class 9 and 10 books are expected in 2026-27. Stay aware of NCERT and CBSE announcements as your Class 11 year approaches. Do not change your current study approach based on upcoming books since their content has not yet been officially published.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Has the JEE Mains syllabus changed because of the NCERT update?
For JEE 2026 and JEE 2027, the syllabus remains the same as previous years. NTA has not officially announced any change to the JEE Mains question paper syllabus for the 2025-26 session. The NCERT changes currently affecting JEE-relevant content are the minor Chemistry correction in Hydrocarbons (Class 11). The major overhaul for Class 11 and 12 books is expected in 2026-27, and whether NTA will revise the JEE syllabus to match will be announced separately. Always check nta.ac.in for official JEE syllabus announcements.
2. Should NEET 2026 students buy new NCERT books or use old ones?
If you have NCERT Biology books printed before 2024, at minimum download and verify the corrected 2025 PDF versions from ncert.nic.in for the two specific corrections — the ATP synthase 4H+ diagram in Class 11 and the secondary oocyte correction in the Class 12 ovary figure. To check if your edition is corrected, look at the photosynthesis diagram. If it shows 4H+, your edition is correct. If it shows 2H+, you need the updated version. Books printed in 2024 and 2025 already carry the corrections.
3. Are the Operation Sindoor and Swadeshi modules part of the exam syllabus?
NCERT has introduced these as supplementary modules, not as core syllabus content for board examinations. At the time of writing, these modules are not part of the CBSE Class 10 or Class 12 board exam question paper syllabus. For competitive exams like JEE and NEET, these modules are not relevant. Always refer to the official CBSE exam syllabus document for your class to confirm what is examinable.
4. Where can I download the latest corrected NCERT books for free?
The official source for all NCERT textbooks is ncert.nic.in/textbook.php. NCERT makes all textbooks available for free download as PDFs. The PDFs on the official website are always the most current version with all corrections applied. Do not rely on third-party websites for NCERT PDFs as they may carry outdated versions. When you open the PDF, check the publication year on the preliminary pages to confirm you have the 2024 or 2025 version.
5. Will the new Class 11 and 12 books in 2026-27 change what JEE Advanced tests?
This is not yet confirmed. IIT, which conducts JEE Advanced, has not announced any syllabus revision in response to the upcoming NCERT changes. Historically, changes to JEE Advanced and JEE Mains syllabi are announced with at least one year of notice. Students currently in Class 11 who will appear for JEE 2027 should watch for NTA and IIT JAB announcements after the new Class 11 books are published in 2026-27. Follow Competishun's YouTube channel and WhatsApp channel for immediate updates when any official announcement is made.
6. What is NEP 2020 and why does it keep coming up in all NCERT discussions?
The National Education Policy 2020 is the government's comprehensive blueprint for reforming Indian education. It was the first major education policy revision since 1986. NEP 2020 proposed a new 5+3+3+4 school structure replacing the old 10+2 system, vocational education from Class 6, reduction of curriculum load, and a shift from exam-focused rote learning to competency-based assessment. All the NCERT book changes happening between 2024 and 2027 are the practical implementation of what NEP 2020 proposed at the school curriculum level.
7. My school is using old Class 8 books in 2025-26. Should I be concerned?
If your school is affiliated to CBSE, CBSE has mandated that schools implement the new NCERT books for all classes where updated books have been released. For Class 8 in 2025-26, this includes the new Science, Social Science, English, Hindi, and Vocational Education books. If your school is still using old books, you should raise it with your school administration since the new books are not updated editions but entirely new books with different chapters and pedagogy. Schools that delay the transition risk students facing content mismatches in the coming years as assessments align to the new curriculum.
