JEE Advanced 2027 Exam Pattern: Paper 1 and Paper 2 Structure, Question Types, Marking Scheme and Time Management Strategy

Two papers · 3 hours each · both compulsory

JEE Advanced is the gateway to the IITs, and it is famous for one thing above all: an exam pattern that changes almost every year. A different IIT sets the paper each cycle, so question types, marking and weightage shift. That is why understanding the structure and the marking logic matters more than memorising a fixed layout. This guide breaks down the JEE Advanced 2027 pattern, every question type, the full, partial and negative marking, and a clear time-management strategy.

All figures below are based on the recent cycles and are indicative, since the pattern is not fixed. Always confirm the exact 2027 structure in the official JEE Advanced brochure and the on-screen instructions on exam day. You can also see the full structure on the Competishun JEE Advanced exam pattern page.

Why the Pattern Changes Every Year and How to Prepare for It

A different IIT conducts JEE Advanced each year, and each has freedom to design the paper. So the number of questions, the exact question types and the marking can differ from the previous year. This is by design, to test genuine understanding rather than pattern familiarity.

Master concepts

Deep understanding survives any pattern change. Focus on the why, not just the how.

Practise all formats

Single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical and matching, so no type surprises you.

Read instructions

On exam day, read the marking rules on screen before you start attempting.

Question Types Explained

JEE Advanced uses several question formats, each with its own marking behaviour. Knowing them well is half the battle.

  • Single correct MCQ: four options, exactly one correct; full marks for right, negative for wrong
  • Multiple correct MCQ: one or more options correct; supports partial marking, but a wrong pick usually triggers full negative
  • Numerical value (NAT): type a number; usually no negative marking, so attempt freely
  • Matching list / matrix match: match items across two lists; often partial marking, no negative in some formats
  • Paragraph-based: a passage followed by linked questions, testing applied understanding
Why it matters: your attempt strategy should differ by type. NAT questions are low risk, multiple-correct are high risk if you are unsure, and single-correct sit in between. Sort questions by risk as you go.

Marking Scheme: Full, Partial and Negative Marks

The marking is section-wise, so the same paper can mix rules. Here is the typical behaviour by type, with the reminder that the exact scheme is printed in the instructions each year.

Question typeFull marksNegative markingPartial marks
Single correct MCQYesYes, for wrongNo
Multiple correct MCQYes, all correctYes, if any wrong pickedYes, partial correct
Numerical value (NAT)YesUsually noneSometimes
Matching / listYesVariesOften yes
Takeaway: NAT is the safest to attempt, multiple-correct the riskiest when unsure. Always read the exact section rules on screen. Indicative, confirm officially.
Example logic: in a multiple-correct question with, say, three correct options, choosing two correct and no wrong option can earn partial marks, while choosing even one wrong option can cost you the full negative. That is why guessing all four options is dangerous.

Partial Marking in Multiple-Correct Questions: Attempt or Skip?

Multiple-correct questions are where marks are made or lost. Partial marking rewards partial knowledge, but only if you avoid wrong options. Use a simple decision rule.

Your certaintyBest move
Sure of all correct optionsAttempt fully for full marks
Sure of one or two, unsure of restMark only the ones you are sure of, for partial marks
Not sure of anySkip, to avoid the negative
Takeaway: mark only options you are confident about. Partial marking rewards safe partial knowledge and punishes risky guessing.

Section-Wise Marks Distribution (Based on Recent Years)

The three subjects carry roughly equal weight, which means you cannot afford to be weak in any one. A rough recent split looks like this per paper.

SubjectApprox share per paper
PhysicsAbout one third
ChemistryAbout one third
MathematicsAbout one third
Takeaway: equal weight means balanced preparation. Chemistry is often the fastest scorer, so use it to bank marks and time. Confirm exact weightage officially.

Time Management: A Plan for a 3-Hour Paper

With about 51 questions in 180 minutes and no calculator, time discipline decides your rank as much as knowledge. Here is a workable structure. Adjust to your strengths.

PhaseTimeWhat to do
First pass~90 minSolve all sure and quick questions across all three subjects, including NAT
Second pass~60 minReturn to medium-difficulty questions you marked for review
Final pass~30 minAttempt tough questions worth the risk, review NAT answers
Takeaway: bank the easy marks first in every subject, then spend the rest on harder questions. Never let one subject swallow another's time.
Chemistry tip: many students clear Chemistry fastest. Doing it early can bank marks and free time for Physics and Maths, which usually take longer.

Attempt Strategy: What to Solve First, What to Leave

A smart order protects your score under pressure. Sort by risk and speed, not by question number.

  • Do first: NAT questions you can solve (no negative) and single-correct you are sure of
  • Do next: multiple-correct where you are sure of at least some options, for partial marks
  • Do carefully: paragraph and matching questions that need setup time
  • Leave: questions where you would only be blind-guessing risky multiple-correct options

Paper 1 vs Paper 2: How the Second Paper Differs

Both papers cover the same three subjects and carry equal weight, but the exact question types and difficulty mix can differ between them. Crucially, they are separate scoring opportunities on the same day.

If Paper 1 goes badly, do not panic. Because both papers count equally, a strong Paper 2 can rescue your total and your rank. Use the gap between papers to reset, forget Paper 1 completely, and treat Paper 2 as a fresh start. Many top rankers recover fully in the second paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the JEE Advanced 2027 exam pattern?
JEE Advanced has two compulsory computer-based papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each 3 hours, covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both use a mix of single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical value and matching questions, with full, partial and negative marking. The exact pattern is not fixed and can change each year, so confirm the official 2027 pattern before the exam.
Is it compulsory to appear in both Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Yes. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory, and both carry equal weightage. Missing either paper affects your total score badly, so you must sit both on exam day, with the scheduled gap between them.
What is the total marks in JEE Advanced 2027?
In recent years each paper has carried around 180 marks, for a combined total near 360, but the total is not fixed and changes with the pattern each year. Treat the recent total as indicative and confirm the exact 2027 marks in the official information brochure.
Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced numerical questions?
Numerical value (integer or decimal) questions usually have no negative marking, so you can attempt them freely. Single-correct and multiple-correct MCQs do carry negative marking. Always read the on-screen instructions, since the exact scheme varies by section and year.
How does partial marking work in JEE Advanced?
In multiple-correct questions, partial marks are awarded when you select some but not all correct options and no wrong option. For example, choosing correct options without any incorrect one can earn partial credit, while selecting any wrong option usually triggers the full negative penalty. The exact rule is given in the instructions each year.
Will the JEE Advanced 2027 pattern change?
Possibly. JEE Advanced is known for changing its pattern, question types and marking almost every year, since a different IIT sets the paper. So prepare for concepts and all question formats rather than a fixed pattern, and read the official 2027 brochure and on-screen instructions carefully.
How many questions are asked in JEE Advanced?
In recent years each paper has had roughly 51 to 54 questions, with about 17 to 18 per subject across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The exact count varies year to year with the pattern, so use recent numbers as a guide and confirm officially.
How much time should I give to each subject?
A common approach is to split the 3 hours roughly evenly across the three subjects, about an hour each, but adjust to your strengths. Do a first pass picking up sure questions in every subject, then return to harder ones. Never let one subject eat the time meant for another.
Is a calculator allowed in JEE Advanced?
No. Physical calculators are not allowed in JEE Advanced, and all calculations must be done manually. Practise mental and quick paper calculation during preparation, since calculation speed directly affects how many questions you can finish.
What should I do if Paper 1 goes badly?
Do not carry Paper 1 into Paper 2. Both carry equal weight, so a strong Paper 2 can rescue your total. Take the gap to reset mentally, forget the first paper, and treat Paper 2 as a fresh chance. Many students recover their rank entirely in the second paper.
