The opening rank is the best (highest) rank allotted a seat; the closing rank is the last (lowest) rank that secured admission for a given institute, branch, category and round. Closing ranks generally relax with each round as candidates upgrade or withdraw — the final round closing rank is your realistic safe benchmark.

No. IIT seats are allotted on JEE Advanced All India Rank, while NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats use JEE Main CRL. NIT closing ranks also differ by Home State and Other State quota — always match your category and quota row.
Vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are filled through CSAB Special Rounds, held after JoSAA concludes. IIT seats are not part of CSAB.
