What are opening & closing ranks? The opening rank is the best (highest) rank allotted a seat; the closing rank is the last (lowest) rank that secured admission for a given institute, branch, category and round. Closing ranks generally relax with each round as candidates upgrade or withdraw — the final round closing rank is your realistic safe benchmark.

The final round closing rank. Round 1 ranks are the tightest and relax across rounds as candidates float, slide or withdraw. The final round figure is your realistic safe benchmark for that branch and category.
Study the trend, not a single year. If a branch's closing rank keeps rising, expect it to stay competitive. Weight the most recent year highest and add a 5–10% safety buffer on the latest closing rank when shortlisting choices.
