What is the NSE Exam?

Paper Pattern & Marking Scheme
The same pattern applies to all five subjects, for a total of 216 marks.

How to Enrol
- Through your school/college: Enrol via the centre in-charge and pay the fee
- Direct online: Enrol at iapt.org.in and pay online
Centre Requirements
- Only government-recognised schools/colleges affiliated to a board or university can be NSE centres
- Coaching centres and private premises CANNOT be registered as a centre
- A minimum of 30 students is required for a school to become a centre
- If your school is not a centre, enrol at a nearby registered centre or directly online

Five Stages to the International Olympiad
Here is the full pathway, using Physics as the example. The schedule is similar for Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Junior Science.
National Standard Examination (NSEP)
November 22, 2026, conducted at around 1700 centres across India.
Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO)
Jan/Feb 2027 by HBCSE Mumbai at 18 centres. 200 students from each Group A & B are shortlisted from NSE.
Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC)
About 40 students (20 from each group) at HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai or Bangalore, with 2 weeks of training.
Pre-Departure Camp
5 selected students undergo rigorous theory and experiment training at HBCSE Mumbai (July 2027).
International Olympiad (IPhO 2027)
The 57th IPhO in Hungary, July 2027, with competition in Theory & Experiment.
NSE to INO: Selection Procedure
The student pool is divided into two groups: Group A (Class XII as of 30.11.2026) and Group B (Class XI or lower as of 30.11.2026). Selection uses these clauses.

India has been participating in the International Physics Olympiad since 1998. In 28 years, more than 99% of Indian contestants have won medals and laurels at the International Olympiads. At the 55th IPhO 2025 in Paris, France, India won 3 Gold and 2 Silver medals.
