How to Practise JEE Main Chapter-Wise PYQs Effectively

Quick answer

To practise JEE Main chapter-wise PYQs effectively, rank your chapters by weightage, then run every chapter through the same 5-step cycle: attempt with a timer, check, tag each mistake, log it, and re-attempt after a week. Inside each chapter, solve 2023 to 2026 first, then 2019 to 2022, and track your accuracy so you know exactly which chapters are exam-ready.

Most students know chapter-wise PYQs are important. Far fewer practise them in a way that actually raises their score. They solve a chapter once, feel good about the ones they got right, and never come back to the ones they got wrong.

Chapter-wise PYQ practice works when it is a system, not a one-time activity. You need to know which chapters to do first, how to work through each one, how to track what is done and how to bring back the questions that tripped you up.

This guide gives you that complete system for JEE Main 2027, so every chapter you finish moves from "studied" to "exam-ready".

Why Chapter-Wise PYQs Work So Well

When you solve a full paper, every question is from a different chapter, so you rarely see patterns. When you solve one chapter's PYQs together, you see every way NTA has framed the same concept across years and shifts. That is where real exam skill comes from.

Chapter-wise practiceYear-wise practice
Builds concept-to-question skillBuilds speed and exam temperament
Shows repeated question types clearlyShows mixed difficulty like the real paper
Best during preparation and revisionBest in the final weeks before the exam
Pinpoints weak concepts inside a chapterPinpoints weak subjects and time leaks
You need both. Do chapter-wise first, year-wise later. See JEE Main 2027 PYQs: 2019–2026 with Solutions for the full year-wise picture.

Step 1: Prioritise Your Chapters (A, B, C)

You will not have time to give every chapter the same attention. Sort your chapters into three buckets so your PYQ hours go where the marks are.

Chapter Priority for PYQ Practice

A

High weightage

All years, every question, 2 to 3 revisits

Do these first
B

Medium weightage

One full pass, revisit mistakes only

C

Low weightage

Recent years only, a light pass

SubjectTypical bucket A chapters (high weightage)
PhysicsCurrent Electricity, Electrostatics, Modern Physics, Rotational Motion, Ray & Wave Optics, Semiconductors
ChemistryChemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, p-Block, General Organic Chemistry, Aldehydes-Ketones-Acids, Mole Concept, Thermodynamics & Equilibrium
MathsCalculus, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices & Determinants, Vectors & 3D, Probability
Confirm your list with the JEE Main chapter-wise weightage. Only start a chapter's PYQs after you have studied it.

Step 2: The 5-Step Practice Cycle for Every Chapter

Run every chapter through the same five steps. Using one fixed cycle removes guesswork and makes every session productive.

The 5-Step Chapter-Wise PYQ Cycle

1

Attempt

With a timer, 15 to 20 questions

2

Check

Read or watch the solution

3

Tag

Concept, calculation or silly mistake

4

Log

Write it in your error book

5

Re-attempt

After 7 days, without help

Repeat until each question is right twice

  • 1. Attempt with a timer: solve a set of 15 to 20 questions from the chapter, starting with 2023 to 2026, without looking at solutions
  • 2. Check: mark each answer right or wrong, then read or watch the solution for every wrong one and for any right one you guessed
  • 3. Tag the mistake: was it a concept gap, a calculation slip, a silly reading error, or a time problem?
  • 4. Log it: write the question reference, the tag and the one-line fix in your error book
  • 5. Re-attempt after 7 days: solve every logged question again without the solution; repeat until you get it right twice in a row
Why tagging matters: a concept gap needs you to go back to theory, but a calculation slip needs more timed practice. Without tags, every wrong answer looks the same and you fix the wrong thing.

Step 3: Timing Targets While Practising

In JEE Main you get 180 minutes for 75 questions, a little over 2 minutes per question on average. Chapter-wise practice is the right time to start building that speed gently.

StageTarget per MCQTarget per numerical
First pass of a chapter3 to 4 minutes4 to 5 minutes
Second pass / revisionAbout 2.5 minutesAbout 3.5 minutes
Final weeksAbout 2 minutesAbout 3 minutes
Accuracy first, speed second. Speed comes naturally once the question types become familiar.

Step 4: Track Every Chapter

A simple tracker tells you, at a glance, which chapters are exam-ready and which still need work. Keep one row per chapter in a notebook or spreadsheet.

ChapterBucketPass 1 accuracyWrong Qs loggedRevisit 1Revisit 2Status
ElectrostaticsA62%9DoneDueImproving
Mole ConceptA81%4DoneDoneExam-ready
ProbabilityA55%11Due-Needs theory
Example rows. A chapter is "exam-ready" once revisits are done and accuracy is consistently above about 80%.
Use the numbers: if a chapter's accuracy is low and most mistakes are tagged "concept", revise the theory before solving more PYQs. If accuracy is fine but the time is high, add more timed sets.

Step 5: Revisit at the Right Time

Most of the learning from PYQs is lost because students never come back to them. Spaced revisits fix that.

WhenWhat to revisit
After about 7 daysEvery question you got wrong or guessed in that chapter
After about 30 daysQuestions that were still wrong on the first revisit
In the final monthYour error book for bucket A chapters, then B
A question is "done" only when you can solve it correctly, twice, without help.

Subject-Wise Notes for Chapter-Wise PYQs

  • Physics: revise the chapter's formulas just before your set; most Physics mistakes are a wrong formula or a missed condition
  • Chemistry: keep NCERT open while checking Inorganic and Organic PYQs, because many answers come straight from its lines and tables
  • Maths: after checking, re-solve wrong questions using the faster method in the solution; Maths rewards speed more than any other subject

Common Mistakes in Chapter-Wise PYQ Practice

  • Starting PYQs before studying the chapter: you end up reading solutions instead of solving
  • Doing only the questions you like: skipping hard questions hides your real gaps
  • Peeking at solutions too early: a genuine attempt is what makes the solution stick
  • Never revisiting: without re-attempts, the same mistakes come back in the exam
  • No tracking: without a tracker you cannot tell which chapters are actually ready

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I practise JEE Main PYQs chapter-wise?
Chapter-wise practice lets you see every way NTA has asked about one concept, back to back. That builds pattern recognition far faster than solving mixed papers, and it shows you exactly which concepts in a chapter you still need to fix.
Which chapters should I practise first?
Start with high-weightage chapters that you have already studied, because they give the most marks per hour of practice. Then move to medium-weightage chapters, and keep low-weightage chapters for a lighter pass later.
How many PYQs should I solve in one sitting?
A focused set of about 15 to 20 questions per sitting works well for most students. It is long enough to cover a chapter's main question types and short enough that you still have time to check solutions and log mistakes properly.
Should I solve recent years first in chapter-wise practice?
Yes. Inside every chapter, start with 2023 to 2026 questions because they match the current pattern and syllabus most closely, then go back to 2019 to 2022 for extra depth.
How often should I revisit chapter-wise PYQs?
Re-attempt the questions you got wrong after about a week, and again after about a month. Spaced revisits like these are what turn a one-time understanding into something you can recall under exam pressure.
Where can I get JEE Main PYQs arranged chapter-wise?
Competishun offers free chapter-wise question and solution pages, chapter-wise PYQ books for paper practice, and the PYQ Express course, where every question is segregated chapter-wise and topic-wise with express video, detailed video and detailed text solutions.
