Introduction to MHT CET 2026

The Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell) has released the MHT CET 2026 exam pattern at cetcell.mahacet.org. This exam is the gateway for admission to engineering, pharmacy, and agriculture colleges in Maharashtra. Eligibility is not limited to Maharashtra students only; candidates from other states can also apply.

An important update is that MHT CET is now conducted twice a year (similar to JEE Main), giving students an extra opportunity to improve their score. The difficulty level is comparable to JEE Main, but with one significant difference: there is no negative marking. This means you can attempt every question without any fear of losing marks, making exam strategy significantly simpler.

The syllabus is based on the Maharashtra State Board curriculum (Class 11 and 12), but preparing from NCERT books alongside is highly recommended for concept clarity. The exam is available in English, Marathi, and Urdu.

For Engineering Aspirants

PCM Group Pattern (Engineering)

Students targeting B.Tech or equivalent engineering programmes choose the PCM group. This paper has 150 questions across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

SubjectQuestionsMarks/QTotal MarksDuration
Physics50150Combined 90 min (Section 1)
Chemistry50150
Mathematics50210090 min (Section 2)
Total150Variable200180 min
Key Insight: Mathematics carries double weightage (2 marks per question). This means the Maths section alone is worth 100 out of 200 total marks, making it the most important section for PCM candidates.
For Pharmacy / Agriculture

PCB Group Pattern (Pharmacy / Agri)

The PCB group is designed for students targeting B.Pharm, agriculture, or allied health science programmes. The structure is biology-heavy with 100 biology questions.

Section Timing Rules

MHT CET has a unique structure with a 90-minute lock per section

Time SlotSectionSubjectsWhat You Can Do
0 to 90 minSection 1Physics + Chemistry (100 Qs)Free movement between Physics and Chemistry
90 to 180 minSection 2Maths (PCM) OR Biology (PCB)Cannot return to Section 1
Critical Rule: Section switching is not allowed. The 90 minutes for Physics + Chemistry can only be used within that section. Once Section 1 is locked, you cannot go back. Complete Section 1 before moving forward.
Strategy: Since there is no negative marking, all questions should be attempted. In the last 5 minutes of each section, fill in all remaining unanswered questions with educated guesses.

Syllabus Weightage: Class 11 vs Class 12

Quick Strategy Reminders

No Negative Marking Strategy

  • Attempt every question: There is no penalty for wrong answers. Leaving any question blank is a wasted opportunity.
  • Educated guessing works: If you can eliminate 1 to 2 options, your odds improve from 25% to 33% or 50%.
  • Last 5 minutes rule: Fill in all unanswered questions with your best guess. Even random guesses will statistically earn some marks.

Section 1 Time Strategy (90 min, Physics + Chemistry)

  • Chemistry first (40 min): Most scoring section. NCERT-direct facts. Build early confidence.
  • Physics second (45 min): Formula-based questions. Conceptual approach.
  • Buffer (5 min): Fill all unattempted with educated guesses.

Section 2 Strategy

  • PCM (Maths, 90 min): 50 questions in 90 minutes = 1.8 minutes per question. Invest extra time in Calculus and Algebra since each question is worth 2 marks.
  • PCB (Biology, 90 min): 100 questions in 90 minutes = under 1 minute each. NCERT-level memorisation matters here. Speed is essential.

Key Points to Remember

  • Mathematics carries double weightage (2 marks per question) in PCM group. Maximum focus should be on this section.
  • The twice-a-year format gives you two attempts. If Session 1 does not go as expected, Session 2 offers another chance.
  • Difficulty level is comparable to JEE Main. Students preparing for JEE Main will find MHT CET very manageable.
  • CET Cell offers official free mock tests at cetcell.mahacet.org. Practice these before the actual exam.
  • Section 1 locks after 90 minutes. You cannot return to Physics or Chemistry after moving to Section 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. There is absolutely no negative marking in MHT CET 2026. You should attempt every single question, even if you need to guess, because there is zero penalty for wrong answers.
No. Once Section 1 (Physics + Chemistry, first 90 minutes) is over, it gets locked automatically. You cannot return to it. You must complete it within the allotted 90 minutes.
Yes. Non-Maharashtra candidates can appear for MHT CET 2026, but they compete in the All India quota with limited seats. Maharashtra domicile candidates have priority access to most government engineering colleges.
MHT CET is available in three languages: English, Marathi, and Urdu. You select your preferred medium during application form filling.
No. MHT CET is generally easier than JEE Main, though difficulty is comparable in some shifts. Plus MHT CET has no negative marking, which makes the strategy simpler. JEE Main aspirants find MHT CET very manageable.
Yes. You can apply for both PCM and PCB groups by paying separate application fees. Each group has its own paper. This is useful if you want to keep options open for both engineering and pharmacy programmes.
For top Maharashtra colleges (COEP, VJTI), aim for 99.5+ percentile (around 170+ marks for PCM). For mid-tier colleges, 95+ percentile (140+ marks). For private colleges, 80+ percentile (110+ marks) is sufficient.
Approximately 20% of questions come from Class 11 syllabus and 80% from Class 12. Class 12 is clearly the major focus area. However, Class 11 topics should not be ignored as they still contribute 30 to 40 questions.
