How to Analyse Your JEE Main PYQ Practice and Learn from Mistakes
After every PYQ set, sort each wrong, skipped or slow question into one of four types: concept gap, calculation slip, misreading, or time. Write the fix in an error book, act on the most frequent type first, and re-attempt every logged question after a week.
Solving PYQs shows you what you can do. Analysing them shows you what to do next. Most score improvements come from the analysis, not the solving.
This guide gives you a simple, repeatable way to analyse every PYQ set and paper, so the same mistakes stop coming back.
In this guide
The 4 Types of Mistakes
| Type | How it looks | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Concept gap | You did not know how to start | Revise the theory, then redo similar PYQs |
| Calculation slip | Right method, wrong number | Timed practice, write steps clearly |
| Misreading | Missed a word, unit or condition | Underline key data before solving |
| Time | Could solve it, but too slowly | Learn the faster method from the solution |
| Each type needs a different fix. That is why tagging matters. | ||
The Analysis Process After Every Set
Analyse in 4 Steps
Mark
Right, wrong, skipped, slow
Tag
Concept, calc, reading, time
Log
Question, tag and one-line fix
Act
Fix the most common type first
- Include slow questions: a correct answer that took 6 minutes is still a problem
- Include guesses: a lucky correct answer is not a correct answer
- Spend real time: analyse for about as long as you attempted
A Simple Error Book Template
| Date | Chapter | Question ref | Type | Fix (one line) | Re-attempt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 Nov | Electrostatics | 2025 Jan S2 Q14 | Concept | Field inside conductor is zero | Due 19 Nov |
| 12 Nov | Integration | 2024 Apr S1 Q72 | Calc | Check limits before substituting | Correct |
| Example rows. Keep it short so you actually use it. | |||||
Reading Your Patterns Over Weeks
| If most mistakes are | Then focus on |
|---|---|
| Concept gaps | Theory revision before more PYQs |
| Calculation slips | Daily timed sets and clean working |
| Misreading | Slowing down on the first read |
| Time | Fast methods and speed drills |
