How is NEET Rank Calculated from Marks?
NEET rank is determined by your raw NEET score (out of 720) compared to all 22.79 lakh candidates who appeared in 2025. The National Testing Agency (NTA) uses a standardised marks-to-rank conversion based on the absolute number of candidates scoring above you. Our predictor applies a 5-year pool-normalised model (2021–2025) with difficulty weighting to give Best Case, Expected, and Worst Case rank estimates for NEET 2026.
Three factors drive your final rank:
- Raw score — Each correct answer gives +4, each wrong answer −1. Maximum 720, minimum −180.
- Tie-breaking — When two candidates score the same, NTA breaks ties using Biology marks first, then Chemistry, then Physics, then fewer wrong answers, then age (older candidate gets better rank).
- Paper difficulty year-on-year — A 600 score in a difficult year (2024) gives a much better rank than 600 in an easy year (2023). Our model adjusts for this.
Use the rank predictor above to enter your expected score and see realistic rank brackets. Then switch to the College Predictor tab to see which government and private MBBS colleges accept your category and home state.
NEET 2026 Marks vs Rank — What Score Do You Need?
Based on NTA NEET 2025 official data and 5-year trends, here's what each score band typically translates to in terms of rank and college options:

|---|---|---|
| 700+ | 1 – 500 | AIIMS Delhi, JIPMER, Top Govt MBBS anywhere |
| 680–699 | 500 – 2,500 | Top AIIMS, MAMC Delhi, AFMC, KGMU Lucknow |
| 660–679 | 2,500 – 6,000 | State AIIMS, Top State Govt MBBS (BMC Mumbai, BMCRI Bangalore, Patna MC) |
| 640–659 | 6,000 – 13,000 | Tier-1 State Govt Colleges, ESIC Medical Colleges |
| 620–639 | 13,000 – 25,000 | Mid-tier Govt MBBS, ASMC UP, GMC Maharashtra Tier-2 |
| 600–619 | 25,000 – 45,000 | Newer Govt MCs, Private (deemed/management quota) |
| 550–599 | 45,000 – 1,00,000 | Private medical colleges, BDS top govt |
| 500–549 | 1,00,000 – 2,00,000 | Private MBBS (state quota / management), BDS |
| 450–499 | 2,00,000 – 3,50,000 | Private MBBS (management quota), BAMS, BHMS |
| Below 450 | 3,50,000+ | AYUSH, Veterinary, MBBS Abroad (Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan) |
⚡ Reserved categories (OBC/SC/ST/EWS) get significantly relaxed cutoffs — use the predictor above with your category for accurate estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this NEET 2026 rank predictor?
Our predictor uses NTA official 2021–2025 data with difficulty weighting and a 576-point dense lookup table. For mid-range scores (450–650), accuracy is typically within ±10% of the actual rank. For very high scores (680+) or very low scores (below 200), the band widens because rank distribution is non-linear at the tails. Always treat the rank as a band, not an exact number.
What's the difference between AIQ rank and category rank?
All India Rank (AIR) is your overall rank among all 22+ lakh candidates. Category rank is your rank only among candidates of your reservation category (e.g., OBC, SC, ST, EWS). For OBC-NCL, SC, and ST seats, your category rank determines admission — not AIR. EWS uses AIR with a relaxed cutoff. Our predictor shows both.
Can I get a government MBBS seat with 550 marks in NEET 2026?
For General category, 550 marks corresponds to roughly AIR 50,000–80,000 — very tough for govt MBBS through AIQ. However, with state quota in less competitive states (Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, Chhattisgarh, NE states), or with reserved category, government MBBS is still possible. For OBC at 550 marks, your category rank improves significantly. For SC/ST, government seats become realistic. Use the College Predictor with your specific category and state for an accurate list.
Should I register for both AIQ and state counselling?
Yes, absolutely. AIQ (15% seats) and state quota (85% seats) run parallel through July–September. Many top scorers miss state counselling and end up with a worse college because they bet only on AIQ. Register for both — you can always decline a state quota seat if you get a better AIQ allotment, but you can't go back if you missed the state registration deadline.
Is private MBBS worth it if I don't get government?
It depends on family finances and your alternatives. Private MBBS in India costs ₹60 lakh – ₹1.5 crore for 4.5 years. Deemed universities are even higher. Compare with: dropping a year (high-risk, NEET 2026 dropper score may be lower), MBBS abroad (₹25–55 lakh in Russia/Georgia/Uzbekistan plus FMGE clearing, around 45–55% pass rate), or pivoting to BAMS/BDS/BHMS. We recommend talking to Competishun counsellors before deciding — many students benefit from a structured drop year vs paying ₹1 crore for a private seat.
When will NEET 2026 results be declared?
Based on the 2025 pattern, NEET 2026 result is expected by mid-June 2026 (exam on 3 May 2026). The provisional answer key releases within 7–10 days of the exam. Final result, scorecard with AIR, and merit list publish at neet.nta.nic.in. MCC AIQ counselling typically starts in late July, with state counselling running parallel.
What makes Competishun's rank predictor more accurate?
Three things set this predictor apart: (1) Our rank model uses 5-year NTA pool-normalisation rather than a simple lookup, giving Best/Expected/Worst case bands. (2) Our college database has 730+ medical colleges with verified 2025 closing ranks (extracted from official MCC and state DME counselling lists), not rough estimates. (3) The AI Counselling Strategy generates a personalised roadmap based on your profile — score, category, state, expected rank — going beyond what generic predictors offer. Built by Competishun's IIT-Delhi faculty led by ABJ Sir, with 18+ years of NEET counselling expertise.
