MHT CET 2027: Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Dates & Preparation Guide

MHT CET 2027 might be the most underrated engineering entrance exam in India right now. While all the attention goes to JEE Main, the PCM group of MHT CET drew nearly 4.8 lakh students in 2026, up from 3.8 lakh in 2024. Conducted by the State CET Cell of Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test is the gateway to engineering, pharmacy and agriculture degree colleges across the state. And as Mohit Tyagi Sir explains, the paper is genuinely on the easier side compared to JEE, which makes MHT CET both a smart backup and a serious opportunity in itself.
This complete guide covers everything about MHT CET 2027: what the exam is, who can apply, the exact paper pattern for PCM and PCB, the syllabus split, marks vs percentile, and how to prepare for it the smart way.
No negative marking, 20% Class 11 and 80% Class 12 syllabus, two sessions every year, and roughly 1 in 2 aspirants gets an engineering seat. If you are preparing for JEE, you are already preparing for most of MHT CET.
What Is MHT CET?
MHT CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) is conducted by the State CET Cell, Maharashtra. It is the common entrance test for admission to engineering (PCM group), pharmacy and agriculture (PCB group) degree courses in Maharashtra colleges. It is a state-level examination, separate from JEE.
Over the last few years the exam has been remodelled on the lines of JEE: it is now held in two sessions a year with many shifts, and ranks are declared through normalization across shifts and percentile scores. So the exam temperament it builds, speed, pressure handling, percentile thinking, is very close to JEE itself.
Why MHT CET 2027 Is a Bigger Opportunity Than You Think
Look at the numbers first. The PCM group has grown from 3.8 lakh students in 2024 to 4.64 lakh in 2025 and nearly 4.8 lakh in 2026. Against about 16 lakh JEE Main aspirants, MHT CET is already one-fourth the size, and it is getting fairly popular every year.
Now look at the seats. There are more than 2 lakh engineering seats across 380 plus Maharashtra colleges. With about 4.8 lakh aspirants and over 2 lakh seats, the selection ratio is close to 50 percent. Roughly every second student gets a seat offered. Whether you take it or not is a different matter, but the opportunity is huge.
And here is the part most outside students miss: 15 percent of seats are open for All India students who do not have Maharashtra domicile. That itself is a very big chunk. If you get a good college through it, that is definitely better than taking admission in some private college that charges heavy fees without the same standard.
Who Can Apply for MHT CET 2027?
The eligibility rules are simple. You must have Physics and Chemistry in Class 12. If you want the PCM group (engineering), you need Mathematics; for the PCB group (pharmacy and agriculture), you need Biology. About 85 percent of seats are for Maharashtra students, and 15 percent come through the All India quota for students from outside the state.
One honest suggestion from the video: if you are from Maharashtra, you should definitely fill this form. If you are from outside and the small form fee is not an issue for you, you should fill it too. A good rank here, even a three-digit rank, is worth updating on your CV, whether or not you finally take admission.
MHT CET Exam Pattern 2027
The paper is 3 hours (180 minutes) long and computer-based. But unlike JEE, you cannot move freely across the full paper. The 3 hours are split into two fixed 90-minute sections, and switching between sections is not allowed.
PCM group (150 questions, 200 marks):
| Section (Time) | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics + Chemistry (first 90 min) | 50 + 50 | 100 (1 mark each) |
| Mathematics (next 90 min) | 50 | 100 (2 marks each) |
| Total | 150 | 200 |
PCB group: the first 90 minutes are the same Physics + Chemistry (100 questions, 100 marks). The second 90-minute section is Biology: 100 questions of 1 mark each. So the PCB paper has 200 questions in 180 minutes.
Three things to lock in: Mathematics carries 50 percent weightage in PCM (double weight per question), there is no negative marking so you must attempt every question, and you cannot switch sections, so unlike JEE you cannot compensate a weak subject with extra time from another.
MHT CET Syllabus: 20% Class 11, 80% Class 12
The syllabus follows the Maharashtra State Board curriculum: only about 20 percent comes from Class 11 and 80 percent from Class 12. This is genuinely good news if your Class 11 preparation was patchy. Many students get serious only in Class 12, and for them this split means their strongest year carries most of the weight.
In Mathematics, the high-weightage chapters to prioritize are Integration, 3D Geometry, Vectors, Differentiation and Probability. Note that Differentiation gets decent weightage here unlike JEE Main, and Probability is very much doable at board level because the exam stays on the easier side.
MHT CET Marks vs Percentile
Because the paper is easier than JEE Main, the marks needed for a top percentile are higher in percentage terms. Roughly 150 to 155 marks out of 200 can put you around 99 percentile. In JEE Main terms, think of it this way: a student at an average JEE Main level can do very well here, because Physics and Chemistry come ultra easy and Mathematics questions are quite solvable with board-level clarity plus practice.
Remember that your percentile comes after normalization across shifts, so it is your relative performance, not just raw marks, that decides your rank.
Why Every JEE Aspirant Should Give MHT CET
If you are already preparing for JEE with Competishun or anywhere else, MHT CET needs almost no separate syllabus effort. What it does need is practice at its own rhythm: 150 questions in 180 minutes means a little over a minute per question in the Physics-Chemistry section. That is a different skill from JEE, and it is learnable with mock tests.
There are three more reasons. First, it can happen before JEE, giving you a real exam-hall experience of speed and pressure, with percentile and normalization just like the real thing. Second, a good MHT CET rank is a genuine backup, often in a better college than an expensive private institute. Third, even a three-digit rank is worth putting on your CV, because this is a fairly well-known examination now.
How to Prepare for MHT CET 2027
The main factor here is not deep knowledge, it is handling the paper. JEE has 75 questions; MHT CET PCM has 150. You need a feel for when to attempt, when to skip, and how to keep easy questions from slipping away. That balance only comes after 5 to 7 full tests, so start with part tests and chapter-wise tests even if your syllabus is not complete, then move to full mocks.
Class 12 syllabus carries 80% weightage, so finish it thoroughly. Add Class 11 high-weightage chapters (Integration, Vectors, 3D) after that.
Give timed tests in the real pattern: 100 questions in 90 minutes for Physics-Chemistry, 50 in 90 minutes for Mathematics. Build speed without panic.
There is no negative marking. In the last minutes, mark all remaining questions. Even a few extra marks can lift your percentile.
After each 3-hour test, spend 30 to 45 minutes on analysis: where you lost time, where you were too fast, which chapters leak marks.
