1. Work Formulas

4. Conservation of Energy

When only conservative forces (like gravity or spring force) act, the total mechanical energy stays constant.

Law: KE + PE = constant  →  ½mv² + mgh = constant

Momentum is conserved in all collisions. Kinetic energy is conserved only in perfectly elastic collisions.

Most problems are solved by picking the right formula and plugging in consistent SI units.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting cosθ: Work uses the angle between force and displacement, not just F × s
  • Sign of work: Friction and opposing forces do negative work
  • Mixing energy and power: Energy is in joules, power is joules per second (watts)
  • KE vs momentum: KE = ½mv² is scalar, momentum p = mv is a vector
  • Assuming KE is always conserved: It is conserved only in elastic collisions, momentum always is

What is the formula for work, energy and power?
Work is W = F·s·cosθ, where F is force, s is displacement and θ is the angle between them. Kinetic energy is KE = ½mv² and gravitational potential energy is PE = mgh. What is the work-energy theorem?
The work-energy theorem states that the net work done on a body equals the change in its kinetic energy: W(net) = ΔKE = ½mv² − ½mu², where u is the initial speed and v is the final speed. It is one of the most useful results in mechanics because it connects force and motion directly through energy.
What is the difference between work, energy and power?
Work is the energy transferred when a force moves an object, measured in joules. Energy is the capacity to do work, also measured in joules, and exists mainly as kinetic and potential energy.
