How to Practise JEE Main Chapter-Wise PYQs Effectively
To practise JEE Main chapter-wise PYQs effectively, rank your chapters by weightage, then run every chapter through the same 5-step cycle: attempt with a timer, check, tag each mistake, log it, and re-attempt after a week. Inside each chapter, solve 2023 to 2026 first, then 2019 to 2022, and track your accuracy so you know exactly which chapters are exam-ready.
Most students know chapter-wise PYQs are important. Far fewer practise them in a way that actually raises their score. They solve a chapter once, feel good about the ones they got right, and never come back to the ones they got wrong.
Chapter-wise PYQ practice works when it is a system, not a one-time activity. You need to know which chapters to do first, how to work through each one, how to track what is done and how to bring back the questions that tripped you up.
This guide gives you that complete system for JEE Main 2027, so every chapter you finish moves from "studied" to "exam-ready".
In this guide
Why Chapter-Wise PYQs Work So Well
When you solve a full paper, every question is from a different chapter, so you rarely see patterns. When you solve one chapter's PYQs together, you see every way NTA has framed the same concept across years and shifts. That is where real exam skill comes from.
| Chapter-wise practice | Year-wise practice |
|---|---|
| Builds concept-to-question skill | Builds speed and exam temperament |
| Shows repeated question types clearly | Shows mixed difficulty like the real paper |
| Best during preparation and revision | Best in the final weeks before the exam |
| Pinpoints weak concepts inside a chapter | Pinpoints weak subjects and time leaks |
| You need both. Do chapter-wise first, year-wise later. See JEE Main 2027 PYQs: 2019–2026 with Solutions for the full year-wise picture. | |
Step 1: Prioritise Your Chapters (A, B, C)
You will not have time to give every chapter the same attention. Sort your chapters into three buckets so your PYQ hours go where the marks are.
Chapter Priority for PYQ Practice
High weightage
All years, every question, 2 to 3 revisits
Do these firstMedium weightage
One full pass, revisit mistakes only
Low weightage
Recent years only, a light pass
| Subject | Typical bucket A chapters (high weightage) |
|---|---|
| Physics | Current Electricity, Electrostatics, Modern Physics, Rotational Motion, Ray & Wave Optics, Semiconductors |
| Chemistry | Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, p-Block, General Organic Chemistry, Aldehydes-Ketones-Acids, Mole Concept, Thermodynamics & Equilibrium |
| Maths | Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices & Determinants, Vectors & 3D, Probability |
| Confirm your list with the JEE Main chapter-wise weightage. Only start a chapter's PYQs after you have studied it. | |
Step 2: The 5-Step Practice Cycle for Every Chapter
Run every chapter through the same five steps. Using one fixed cycle removes guesswork and makes every session productive.
The 5-Step Chapter-Wise PYQ Cycle
Attempt
With a timer, 15 to 20 questions
Check
Read or watch the solution
Tag
Concept, calculation or silly mistake
Log
Write it in your error book
Re-attempt
After 7 days, without help
Repeat until each question is right twice
- 1. Attempt with a timer: solve a set of 15 to 20 questions from the chapter, starting with 2023 to 2026, without looking at solutions
- 2. Check: mark each answer right or wrong, then read or watch the solution for every wrong one and for any right one you guessed
- 3. Tag the mistake: was it a concept gap, a calculation slip, a silly reading error, or a time problem?
- 4. Log it: write the question reference, the tag and the one-line fix in your error book
- 5. Re-attempt after 7 days: solve every logged question again without the solution; repeat until you get it right twice in a row
Step 3: Timing Targets While Practising
In JEE Main you get 180 minutes for 75 questions, a little over 2 minutes per question on average. Chapter-wise practice is the right time to start building that speed gently.
| Stage | Target per MCQ | Target per numerical |
|---|---|---|
| First pass of a chapter | 3 to 4 minutes | 4 to 5 minutes |
| Second pass / revision | About 2.5 minutes | About 3.5 minutes |
| Final weeks | About 2 minutes | About 3 minutes |
| Accuracy first, speed second. Speed comes naturally once the question types become familiar. | ||
Step 4: Track Every Chapter
A simple tracker tells you, at a glance, which chapters are exam-ready and which still need work. Keep one row per chapter in a notebook or spreadsheet.
| Chapter | Bucket | Pass 1 accuracy | Wrong Qs logged | Revisit 1 | Revisit 2 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electrostatics | A | 62% | 9 | Done | Due | Improving |
| Mole Concept | A | 81% | 4 | Done | Done | Exam-ready |
| Probability | A | 55% | 11 | Due | - | Needs theory |
| Example rows. A chapter is "exam-ready" once revisits are done and accuracy is consistently above about 80%. | ||||||
Step 5: Revisit at the Right Time
Most of the learning from PYQs is lost because students never come back to them. Spaced revisits fix that.
| When | What to revisit | |
|---|---|---|
| After about 7 days | Every question you got wrong or guessed in that chapter | |
| After about 30 days | Questions that were still wrong on the first revisit | |
| In the final month | Your error book for bucket A chapters, then B | |
| A question is "done" only when you can solve it correctly, twice, without help. | ||
Subject-Wise Notes for Chapter-Wise PYQs
- Physics: revise the chapter's formulas just before your set; most Physics mistakes are a wrong formula or a missed condition
- Chemistry: keep NCERT open while checking Inorganic and Organic PYQs, because many answers come straight from its lines and tables
- Maths: after checking, re-solve wrong questions using the faster method in the solution; Maths rewards speed more than any other subject

Common Mistakes in Chapter-Wise PYQ Practice
- Starting PYQs before studying the chapter: you end up reading solutions instead of solving
- Doing only the questions you like: skipping hard questions hides your real gaps
- Peeking at solutions too early: a genuine attempt is what makes the solution stick
- Never revisiting: without re-attempts, the same mistakes come back in the exam
- No tracking: without a tracker you cannot tell which chapters are actually ready
