Who Can Apply: The Three Categories

CBSE accepts private candidate applications in exactly three categories. Picking the right one matters, because the category decides how many subjects you write and what documents you receive.

Essential Repeat

Students declared Essential Repeat in Class 12 in 2026, or declared Fail or Essential Repeat in any of the years 2021 to 2026. Also covers students who got a roll number for 2026 but could not appear due to medical reasons (shortage of attendance does not count). These candidates appear in full subjects (5 or 6).

Compartment (Second Chance)

Students placed in Compartment in the Board's Main and Supplementary Examinations 2026. You apply only in the compartment subject. If you want to re-appear in all subjects instead, you must select the Essential Repeat category while applying online.

Improvement of Performance

Only students who passed the Board's 2026 examination. You can apply in one or more subjects, but only in subjects you appeared in during 2026. New or additional subjects are not permitted.

One form only: a candidate who has submitted one application cannot apply again under any other category. Choose carefully before you submit.

Fee Structure (Annexure-4 of the Notice)

Fees are accepted online only, through Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card (national or international) and UPI. The last date for fee submission is the same as the form submission date.

Fee headIndiaNepalOther countries
Exam fee (per subject)Rs 320Rs 1,100Rs 2,200
Practical fee, Class 12 (per practical subject)Rs 160Rs 175Rs 375
Late fee (24 to 30 Oct, per candidate)Rs 2,000Rs 2,000Rs 2,000
Pay from your own, your parent's or your sibling's account so that any refund reaches the right person.
Fee deadline warning: the fee must reach the bank within 4 days of finalising the form, or by the circular's last date, whichever is earlier. A form without fee payment by the last date is rejected.

How to Apply: The Official Route

Apply only through the "Vyaktigat Pariksharthi" (Private Candidate) link at cbse.gov.in/newsite/private/index.html. CBSE accepts no offline applications and no physical copies need to be sent to any regional office.

Keep documents ready

Previous marksheet, roll number, school number and centre number from 2026. CwSN candidates should keep the medical or disability certificate ready for upload.

Use a working email ID

The email ID is OTP-verified during the process. Use an ID you can access right now, not an old school ID.

Fill details exactly as on the marksheet

For 2026 candidates the name fields auto-generate. For 2025 or earlier, fill manually. A wrong roll, school or centre number means the application is not processed.

Upload photo and signature

Scanned JPG files, each not exceeding 40 KB. The photo must be recent (last 6 months), full colour, with the face covering about 80% of the frame.

Choose the exam city carefully

Your centre is allotted based on the city you choose, and it will not be changed later. You fill an undertaking to this effect while applying.

Pay and save the printout

Pay online within the window and download a copy of the submitted form for your records.

Exam city is final: once the centre or city is allotted, no change requests are considered. This is the single most common regret students report, so decide the city before you start the form.

After You Apply: Roll Number, Admit Card, Documents

Fresh roll number
A new roll number is allotted for 2027. Your previous year's roll number cannot be used.
Admit cards
Downloadable from cbse.nic.in for all private candidates.
Original marksheet and certificate
Sent by Speed Post to your residential address by the Regional Office (outside Delhi). In Delhi, collect from the exam centre on production of the original admit card.
Uncollected documents
The centre retains them for one year from the month of result declaration, then returns them to the Regional Office.
Migration certificate: CBSE no longer issues a hard copy as compulsory practice. Apply online after the result declaration. A soft copy is available immediately after the result for Class 12 students.
