Who Can Apply for Improvement
The notice is strict here. Improvement of Performance in the CBSE class 12 improvement exam 2027 is open only to students who passed the Board's 2026 examination. If you were placed in Essential Repeat or Compartment, you do not use this category, you use your own category (each has a separate detailed guide linked below).
Passed in 2026
You cleared Class 12 in the 2026 board examinations and now want better marks in one or more subjects.
Not for 2025 or earlier pass-outs
The improvement category in this notice is tied to the 2026 examination. Students from earlier years fall under different rules, check the eligibility guide.
Improvement Rules That Matter

Allowed
- One or more subjects, no cap stated in the notice
- Any subject you appeared in during the 2026 examination
- Theory only, with practical marks carried forward
- A separate fresh marksheet for the 2027 attempt
Not Allowed
- New or additional subjects you did not take in 2026
- Submitting more than one application form
- Applying again under a different category later
- Using the previous year's roll number
What Happens to Your Marksheet

Your old marksheet stays with you
The original marksheet and certificate of the previous year are NOT to be surrendered to CBSE. You keep them.
You get a separate new marksheet
Improvement candidates receive a fresh Marksheet cum Certificate reflecting only the marks obtained in the 2027 improvement examination.
No combined percentage from the board
The board does not mention any aggregate score or percentage. Where a percentage is needed, it is calculated as per the norms of the admitting college or institution.
Compartment candidates are different
A consolidated marksheet combining 2026 and 2027 marks is issued only to second chance Compartment candidates who pass in 2027, not to improvement candidates.
Practical Marks: Carry Forward Rule
Annexure-3 of the notice says the practical, internal assessment or project marks scored by the student will be carried forward, or pro-rata marks will be given, or the practical examination will be conducted again, as per the applicable provisions of the bye-laws.

The College Cut-off Angle
Many students take the CBSE class 12 improvement exam 2027 to lift their aggregate for college admission cut-offs. If that is your goal, plan the subjects strategically: improve in the subjects where the gap to your target is smallest, because every subject you add costs Rs 320 and another full board paper.
