CBSE Improvement & Private Candidate Eligibility Criteria 2027: Who Can Apply, Rules & Category-Wise Details

3 categories: match your 2026 result

This private candidate eligibility criteria 2027 guide covers everything in the official CBSE notice. Before you fill the CBSE private candidate form for 2027, the single most important step is confirming that you are eligible under the right category.

The official notice (No. CBSE/COORD/PRIVATE-XII/2026-27, dated 7 October 2026) defines exactly who can apply, and the wrong category means a rejected application. This guide turns Annexure-1 of the notice into a simple category-wise matrix. Find your situation in the table, note your category name, and use it when you fill the form on the Vyaktigat Pariksharthi portal.

Read this first: one candidate can submit only one application, and cannot apply again under any other category. Eligibility mistakes cannot be fixed after submission, so verify your category here before you start.

Essential Repeat: Full Detail

Who qualifies

Result declared Essential Repeat in Class 12 in 2026, or declared Fail or Essential Repeat in any Class 12 examination from 2021 to 2026. The six-year window is the key detail most students miss.

Medical non-appearance

Students who completed the regular course, were allotted a roll number for the 2026 exam, but could not appear due to medical reasons. Shortage of attendance is explicitly excluded.

What you write

Full subjects, 5 or 6, as per the subjects of your original appearance.

Compartment: Full Detail

Under the private candidate eligibility criteria 2027, the notice calls these Second Chance Compartment Candidates: students placed in Compartment in the Board's Main and Supplementary Examinations 2026.

The core restriction

Compartment candidates may apply ONLY in the compartment subject. This is the strictest subject rule among the three categories.

Want all subjects instead?

If you were placed in Compartment in one subject but prefer to re-appear in all subjects you took in 2026, select the Essential Repeat category while applying online. This option exists in the notice, but you must choose it at form-filling time.

Consolidated marksheet: second chance Compartment candidates who pass in 2027 are the only group that receives a consolidated marksheet and certificate combining 2026 and 2027 marks.

Improvement: Full Detail

Improvement of Performance is for passed students of 2026 only. One or more subjects, but every subject must be one you appeared in during 2026. New subjects are not permitted, and the old marksheet is not surrendered.

Full improvement rules, marksheet policy and the cut-off strategy are covered in our dedicated improvement guide linked below.

Special Cases

The private candidate eligibility criteria 2027 includes special provisions for these cases.

CwSN Candidates

Exemptions and concessions as per the RPwD Act 2016 circular dated 12 April 2019. Upload the medical or disability certificate; facilities granted earlier are extended on uploading documents.

Visually Impaired (Delhi only)

Candidates with blindness may opt for Music subject codes 031 to 036 instead of a subject involving lab practice.

Subject Combinations

Informatics Practices cannot be taken with Computer Science. Sanskrit combinations have restricted options, and a candidate can opt for at most two languages as electives.

Who Is NOT Eligible

If none of the rows in the private candidate eligibility criteria 2027 matrix above matches your situation, do not submit a form, it will only be rejected.

  • Students who never appeared in a CBSE Class 12 examination and do not fall in any listed category.
  • Improvement seekers from 2025 or earlier under this notice, which ties improvement to the 2026 examination.
  • Anyone trying a second application after submitting one, in any category.
  • Students with wrong roll, school or centre numbers, their application is simply not processed.
False statements are treated as unfair practice: wrong entries, false statements or forged documents lead to form rejection and fee forfeiture.
