Why Practise JEE Main PYQs from 2019 to 2026?

Quick answer

Because 2019 is when the modern JEE Main began. From 2019, NTA has conducted the exam fully on computer, in multiple sessions and shifts, with percentile-based normalisation. That makes 2019 to 2026 the largest bank of questions that genuinely look like the paper you will write in 2027, while older papers come from a different exam setup.

You will hear the advice "solve PYQs from 2019 onwards" again and again. But why 2019? Why not 2015, or only the last three years?

Understanding the reason helps you use these papers well. This guide explains what changed in 2019, what each set of years teaches you, and what this range can and cannot do for your JEE Main 2027 preparation.

What Changed in 2019

Before 20192019 onwards
Conducted byCBSENational Testing Agency (NTA)
ModePen-and-paper and computer options in some yearsFully computer-based

That is why 2019 is the natural starting point for JEE Main 2027 PYQ practice.

6 Reasons to Practise 2019 to 2026 PYQs

  • 1. Same paper-setter style: NTA's way of framing questions, mixing concepts and setting numericals has stayed consistent since 2019
  • 2. A huge question bank: multiple sessions and many shifts every year give you thousands of real questions
  • 3. Concepts repeat: the same ideas, setups and question types appear across years, so practice compounds
  • 4. Real difficulty calibration: you learn exactly how hard JEE Main actually is, instead of over-preparing rare, very hard problems
  • 5. Numerical practice: numerical value questions have been part of the paper since 2020, giving you plenty of real practice
  • 6. Ready for small changes: seeing how the pattern evolved from 2019 to 2026 makes you comfortable with any minor change in 2027

What This Range Will Not Do for You

PYQs are the most valuable practice resource, but they are not the whole plan.

  • They will not replace concepts: if a chapter is weak, PYQs will expose it, but you still need to study the theory
  • They will not predict 2027 questions: new questions will come in the same style, so understanding beats memorising answers
  • They will not build stamina alone: combine full papers with regular mock tests in the last months
The right balance: concepts first, chapter-wise PYQs to build skill, full 2025 and 2026 papers plus mocks to build exam temperament.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I practise JEE Main PYQs from 2019 onwards?
From 2019, JEE Main has been conducted by NTA as a fully computer-based exam in multiple sessions and shifts. The question style, difficulty and normalisation system from that point are the closest to what you will face in 2027, which makes 2019 to 2026 the most relevant PYQ range.
Who conducted JEE Main before 2019?
Before 2019, JEE Main was conducted by CBSE, with both pen-and-paper and computer-based options in some years. NTA took over from 2019 and moved the exam fully to computer-based testing with multiple sessions.
Do questions from 2019 to 2026 repeat in JEE Main?
Exact questions rarely repeat, but concepts, setups and question types repeat often across years and shifts. Practising 2019 to 2026 builds strong recognition of these patterns.
Is practising 2019 to 2026 PYQs enough for JEE Main 2027?
It covers the most valuable real-exam practice, but you should combine it with concept revision and full-length mock tests. PYQs show you what NTA asks; mocks train you for new questions in the same style.
Are older 2019 to 2023 questions still in the syllabus?
Most are, but NTA trimmed the JEE Main syllabus from 2024, so a few older questions come from topics that are no longer included. Check unfamiliar questions against the current syllabus before spending time on them.
How should I divide time across 2019 to 2026 PYQs?
Spend the most time on 2023 to 2026, because they match the current pattern most closely. Use 2021 and 2022 for extra depth, and 2019 and 2020 mainly for chapter-wise practice in high-weightage chapters.
