How Many Years of PYQs Should You Solve for JEE Main 2027?

Quick answer

For JEE Main 2027, the minimum is 4 years (2023 to 2026, every shift). The recommended range is 6 years (2021 to 2026). If you are aiming for 99+ percentile and have time, go up to 8 years (2019 to 2026), mainly chapter-wise. Going further back than 2019 rarely helps. What matters most is not the number of years, but how thoroughly you solve, analyse and re-attempt them.

"How many years of PYQs should I solve?" is one of the most common questions JEE Main aspirants ask, and the answers online range from three years to fifteen. The truth is that there is no single number. It depends on how much time you have left, where your preparation stands and what score you are aiming for.

This guide gives you a clear answer for each situation, explains why going too far back can waste your time, and shows you how to tell when you have solved enough.

Minimum, Recommended and Ideal: The Three Tiers

How Many Years of JEE Main PYQs?

4

Minimum

2023 to 2026, every shift

Everyone must do this
6

Recommended

2021 to 2026, all shifts

Best for most students
8

Ideal

2019 to 2026, chapter-wise

For 99+ aspirants

Minimum: 2023 to 2026 (4 years)

These years are closest to the JEE Main 2027 pattern and syllabus. Every shift here is essentially a preview of the paper you will write. No student should skip them.

Recommended: 2021 to 2026 (6 years)

Adding 2021 and 2022 gives you a much larger question bank. 2021 alone had four sessions, so it adds a lot of fresh questions in a pattern that is still very close to today's.

Ideal: 2019 to 2026 (8 years)

2019 and 2020 are useful for extra depth in high-weightage chapters. Solve them chapter-wise rather than as full papers, because the older format and some topics no longer match the current syllabus.

Syllabus check for older years: NTA trimmed the JEE Main syllabus from 2024. If a 2019 to 2023 question looks unfamiliar, check it against the JEE Main 2027 syllabus before spending time on it.

How Many Years Based on Time Left

The less time you have, the more you should focus on recent years and on doing them properly.

Time leftFull papersChapter-wise only
6+ months2023–20262019–2022 for all chapters
3 to 6 months2024–20262021–2023 for high-weightage chapters
1 to 3 months2025–20262023–2024 for your weak chapters
Under 1 month2026, then 2025Your error book only
Fewer years solved thoroughly beats more years rushed. Always analyse and re-attempt mistakes.

How Many Years Based on Your Target

Target percentileYears to solveFocus
Up to 902023–2026Accuracy on easy and medium questions
90 to 972021–2026All high-weightage chapters, timed full papers
97 to 992020–2026Speed, tricky numericals, weak-chapter depth
99+2019–2026Every chapter, harder questions, fast methods
A higher target needs more exposure to unusual question types, which is why older years help top scorers.

Why Not Solve 10 or 15 Years of PYQs?

More years sound better, but past 2019 the returns drop quickly.

  • Different format: older papers follow an earlier exam structure, so timing yourself on them gives a misleading picture
  • Out-of-syllabus topics: many older questions come from topics that are no longer part of JEE Main
  • Time cost: every hour on a 2012 paper is an hour not spent mastering 2024 to 2026 or taking mocks
  • Diminishing returns: the important concepts already repeat many times within 2019 to 2026
Better use of extra time: instead of adding older years, re-attempt your mistakes from 2019 to 2026 and take more full-length mock tests in the real exam interface.

How to Know You Have Solved Enough

The right number of years is the one after which these signs show up in your practice.

  • Accuracy above about 80%: on fresh PYQs from a chapter you have practised
  • Re-attempts are correct: questions you got wrong earlier now come right without help
  • Quick recognition: you can tell the question type and method within a few seconds
  • No surprises: new questions from that chapter feel familiar rather than new
Chapter by chapter: you may need 4 years for a chapter you are strong in and 8 years for one you find difficult. Decide the number of years per chapter, not just for the whole syllabus. Our guide on practising chapter-wise PYQs shows how to track this.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many years of PYQs should I solve for JEE Main 2027?
At minimum, solve every shift from 2023 to 2026, because these match the current pattern and syllabus most closely. If you have more time, extend to 2021 to 2026 (six years). Students aiming for 99 percentile and above, with enough time, can go up to eight years, 2019 to 2026, mainly chapter-wise for high-weightage chapters.
Are 5 years of PYQs enough for JEE Main?
Five years, for example 2022 to 2026, is enough for most students if every shift is solved properly, mistakes are analysed and wrong questions are re-attempted. Depth of practice matters more than adding more years.
Should I solve PYQs older than 2019?
Usually not. Papers before 2019 come from an older exam format and include topics that are no longer in the current syllabus. Your time is better spent mastering 2019 to 2026 thoroughly and taking full-length mocks.
I have only 3 months left. How many years of PYQs should I solve?
Focus on 2024 to 2026 for full papers, and solve 2022 to 2023 chapter-wise only for high-weightage chapters. With limited time, solving fewer years properly is far better than rushing through many years.
How do I know I have solved enough PYQs?
You have done enough when your accuracy on new PYQs from a chapter stays above about 80 percent, your re-attempts of old mistakes are correct, and you keep recognising question types quickly. If new questions still surprise you in a chapter, solve more years for that chapter.
Do I need all shifts of each year?
For the most recent years, yes, because every shift adds fresh questions in the current pattern. For older years, chapter-wise practice from all shifts is more useful than attempting every full shift paper.
