Chapter-Wise or Year-Wise PYQs: Which Should You Solve First?
Solve JEE Main PYQs chapter-wise first, then year-wise. Chapter-wise practice builds concept-to-question skill while you study or revise. Year-wise full papers build speed and exam temperament, so they work best in the last two to three months, once most of the syllabus is done. In between, combine both.
Every JEE Main aspirant eventually faces this choice: open a chapter and solve all its previous year questions, or pick a full shift paper and attempt it like the real exam? Both are useful. The real question is which one comes first, and when to switch.
This guide gives you a clear answer, shows you the signs that tell you it is time to switch, and lays out a month-by-month plan that uses both formats in the right order for JEE Main 2027.
In this guide
Chapter-Wise vs Year-Wise: What Each One Does
| Chapter-wise PYQs | Year-wise PYQs | |
|---|---|---|
| What you solve | All questions from one chapter, across years | One full shift paper, all subjects |
| Main skill built | Concept to question, pattern recognition | Speed, stamina, section switching |
| Best time | While studying and revising chapters | Last 2 to 3 months |
| Shows you | Weak concepts inside a chapter | Weak subjects, time leaks, silly mistakes |
| Feels like | Focused practice | The real exam |
| They are not competitors. Chapter-wise builds the skill; year-wise tests whether you can use it under pressure. | ||
Why Chapter-Wise Comes First
- It needs only one chapter done: you can start the day you finish a chapter, months before the exam
- Patterns become obvious: seeing ten questions on one concept back to back teaches you how NTA frames it
- Mistakes are easy to fix: a wrong answer points to a specific concept you just studied
- Early full papers mislead: attempting a full paper with half the syllabus done gives a low score and little useful feedback
When to Switch to Year-Wise Papers
Do not switch on a fixed date. Switch when these signs show up.
Ready for Year-Wise Papers?
Syllabus
About 80% of chapters completed and practised chapter-wise
Accuracy
Around 75 to 80% on chapter-wise sets in most chapters
Timing
About 2 to 3 minutes per question in chapter-wise sets
If two of these three are true, start one full paper a week
Month-by-Month Plan Using Both
For a JEE Main 2027 aspirant writing Session 1 in late January, a balanced plan looks like this.
| Period | Chapter-wise | Year-wise |
|---|---|---|
| Till October | Main focus: every chapter you finish or revise | None yet |
| November | Revision of high-weightage chapters | 1 full paper a week (2023 or 2024) |
| December | Only weak chapters | 2 full papers a week (2024, 2025) |
| January (before exam) | Your error book only | 3 to 4 papers a week (2025, 2026) |
| Keep one or two 2026 papers untouched for the final week, so you have fresh realistic practice. | ||
Rules for Year-Wise Papers
A year-wise paper is only useful if you treat it like the real exam.
- Full 3 hours, no breaks: attempt at your actual exam shift time if you can
- No solutions during the paper: mark doubtful questions and move on, as you would in the exam
- Prefer recent years: 2025 and 2026 match the current pattern exactly, with all numericals compulsory
- Analyse for as long as you attempted: every wrong, skipped and slow question goes into your error book
- Watch fast methods: even for correct answers, a quicker method can save minutes next time
Exceptions: Late Starters and Weak Chapters
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Less than 6 weeks left | Chapter-wise only for high-weightage and weak chapters; the rest of the time on 2025 and 2026 full papers |
| Syllabus done, never solved PYQs | Two weeks of fast chapter-wise practice on recent years, then switch to full papers |
| A chapter keeps costing marks in full papers | Go back to chapter-wise PYQs for that chapter, even late |
| Strong student, early start | Chapter-wise for all 8 years, then full papers from 2023 onward |
