Scalar vs Vector: The Basic Difference

A scalar has only magnitude. A vector has both magnitude and direction.

Vector Addition Formulas

Resolution of Vectors (Components)

Any vector can be broken into perpendicular components, which makes calculations far easier.

Resolving into components is the standard method to add several vectors accurately.

Notice the 3-4-5 pattern appears often, it is worth memorising.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Adding vectors like scalars: You cannot just add magnitudes, direction matters
  • Dot vs cross: Dot gives a scalar (cosθ), cross gives a vector (sinθ)
  • Wrong component: The component along the axis uses cos, perpendicular uses sin
  • Forgetting direction: A resultant needs both magnitude and direction (the angle α)
Golden rule: When two vectors are involved, ask what you need. Angle or work leans on the dot product; area or torque leans on the cross product.

What is the difference between a scalar and a vector?
A scalar has only magnitude, while a vector has both magnitude and direction. For example, mass, temperature, speed and energy are scalars, whereas displacement, velocity, force and acceleration are vectors. Scalars are added by simple arithmetic, but vectors must be added using vector laws that take direction into account.
What is the parallelogram law of vector addition?
The parallelogram law states that if two vectors are represented by two adjacent sides of a parallelogram, their resultant is given by the diagonal. The magnitude is R = √(A² + B² + 2AB·cosθ), where θ is the angle between the vectors, and the direction is given by tanα = (B·sinθ) / (A + B·cosθ).
What is the difference between dot product and cross product?
The dot product (scalar product) of two vectors gives a scalar: A·B = AB·cosθ. The cross product (vector product) gives a vector perpendicular to both: its magnitude is |A×B| = AB·sinθ, with direction given by the right-hand rule. Work is a dot product, while torque and angular momentum are cross products.
How do you resolve a vector into components?
A vector A making angle θ with the x-axis is resolved into a horizontal component Ax = A·cosθ and a vertical component Ay = A·sinθ. The original vector can be recovered as A = √(Ax² + Ay²) with direction tanθ = Ay/Ax. Resolving vectors into components is the standard way to add and analyse them.
