How to Analyse Your JEE Main PYQ Practice and Learn from Mistakes

Quick answer

After every PYQ set, sort each wrong, skipped or slow question into one of four types: concept gap, calculation slip, misreading, or time. Write the fix in an error book, act on the most frequent type first, and re-attempt every logged question after a week.

Solving PYQs shows you what you can do. Analysing them shows you what to do next. Most score improvements come from the analysis, not the solving.

This guide gives you a simple, repeatable way to analyse every PYQ set and paper, so the same mistakes stop coming back.

The 4 Types of Mistakes

TypeHow it looksFix
Concept gapYou did not know how to startRevise the theory, then redo similar PYQs
Calculation slipRight method, wrong numberTimed practice, write steps clearly
MisreadingMissed a word, unit or conditionUnderline key data before solving
TimeCould solve it, but too slowlyLearn the faster method from the solution
Each type needs a different fix. That is why tagging matters.

The Analysis Process After Every Set

Analyse in 4 Steps

1

Mark

Right, wrong, skipped, slow

2

Tag

Concept, calc, reading, time

3

Log

Question, tag and one-line fix

4

Act

Fix the most common type first

  • Include slow questions: a correct answer that took 6 minutes is still a problem
  • Include guesses: a lucky correct answer is not a correct answer
  • Spend real time: analyse for about as long as you attempted

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I analyse my PYQ practice?
Mark each question as right, wrong, skipped or slow, tag every problem as concept, calculation, misreading or time, log a one-line fix and re-attempt after a week.
What is an error book?
A short log of every mistake with the chapter, question reference, mistake type and fix. Revising it is one of the highest-value activities before the exam.
How long should analysis take?
About as long as the attempt itself for full papers. For short chapter sets, 15 to 20 minutes is usually enough.
Should I analyse questions I got right?
Yes, if they took too long or were guesses. A slow or lucky correct answer still needs work.
What if most of my mistakes are calculation errors?
Do short timed sets daily, write clean steps, and re-check units and signs before marking an answer.
