MHT CET vs JEE Main 2027: Which Exam Is Easier? Eligibility, Difficulty & College Options
MHT CET is generally easier than JEE Main in question difficulty: it follows the Maharashtra State Board syllabus, has no negative marking and tests speed. JEE Main follows the NCERT-based NTA syllabus, has negative marking and deeper problem-solving. MHT CET opens state colleges in Maharashtra, while JEE Main opens NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and the path to the IITs.
If you are a PCM student in Maharashtra, or aiming for colleges there, you will probably write both MHT CET and JEE Main. The question is not which one to choose, but how they differ and how to prepare for both.
This guide compares MHT CET and JEE Main 2027 on syllabus, difficulty, pattern, eligibility and college options.

Which Exam Is Easier?
- Questions: MHT CET questions are usually more direct; JEE Main questions are deeper and often combine concepts
- Speed: MHT CET is faster: about a minute per Physics and Chemistry question
- Marking: no negative marking in MHT CET makes guessing safe; JEE Main penalises wrong MCQs
- Competition: MHT CET is mostly state-level; JEE Main is national
Eligibility, Including Non-Maharashtra Students
- MHT CET: Class 12 with PCM or PCB; Maharashtra candidates compete for state-quota seats
- Non-Maharashtra candidates: can apply for the seats open to all-India candidates in Maharashtra, as per the CAP rules for that year
- JEE Main: open to candidates across India who meet NTA's Class 12 criteria
College Options Each Exam Opens

How to Prepare for Both
- Common core: most Physics, Chemistry and Maths concepts overlap
- Add CET-only topics: for example Mathematical Logic and Linear Programming
- Practise CET speed: timed MHT CET mocks after the boards
- Use the timeline: JEE Main Session 1 is in January; both MHT CET attempts come after the boards
