What Is "Exploration" — The New NCERT Class 9 Science Book

The National Council of Educational Research and Training published a brand new Class 9 Science textbook in April 2026, titled Exploration: Textbook of Science for Grade 9. This replaces the old combined Class 9 Science book that students have been using for years. It is the first complete redesign of the Class 9 Science curriculum since NCERT's last major revision, and it is the direct result of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

The title "Exploration" is not just a name — it reflects the entire philosophy of the book. Science is no longer presented as a fixed collection of facts to memorise. Instead, the book invites students to ask questions, observe carefully, build models, make predictions, and understand how scientific knowledge is actually constructed. The page numbers are framed with a magnifying glass and a compass — symbols chosen deliberately to represent careful observation and purposeful direction in learning.

Who prepared this book? The book was developed under the Curricular Area Group for Science, chaired by Shekhar C. Mande (Former Director General, CSIR; Distinguished Professor, Savitribai Phule Pune University). The team includes senior professors from TIFR, IISc, HBCSE, IIT Bombay, NCERT, and top universities across India. Reviewed by Fields Medallist Manjul Bhargava (Princeton University) among others.

Net result: Old book had 15 chapters. New book has 13 chapters — but each chapter is significantly deeper and broader than before. Earth Science is entirely new. Reproduction moves to Class 9 from Class 10.

10 New Learning Features That Did Not Exist in the Old Book

The biggest visible change in the new Exploration book is the introduction of 10 distinct pedagogical features embedded throughout every chapter. The old NCERT Class 9 Science book had standard activities and exercises. The new book has an entirely different structure:

Think It Over

Open-ended questions at the start of each chapter — often unanswerable immediately, designed to trigger curiosity and set the direction of enquiry.

Pause and Ponder

Self-assessment questions after every section or sub-section. Encourages students to check understanding before moving forward.

Threads of Curiosity

Enrichment boxes with interesting facts, challenging ideas, and thought-provoking observations — like why the speed of light is called 'c' (from Latin 'celeritas').

Ready to Go Beyond

Advanced concepts that go deeper than standard Class 9 level. Specifically designed for students who want to explore further or are targeting competitive exams.

Bridging Science and Society

Shows how science has solved real-world problems — improving health, protecting environment, advancing technology. Builds responsible citizenship thinking.

India's Scientific Contributions

Highlights achievements of Indian scientists and institutions from ancient times to present — directly addresses NEP 2020's emphasis on Indian knowledge traditions.

Think as a Scientist

Encourages students to modify experiments, try different approaches, and investigate further. Connects theory with real-world application through hands-on thinking.

Meet a Scientist

Brief biographies of Indian and international scientists related to each chapter's topic — from Meghnad Saha to modern researchers. Makes science human and inspiring.

Journey Beyond

Activities and projects involving classmates, experts, teachers, parents, and community. Makes science a social and collaborative experience, not just a classroom subject.

QR Codes

Every unit has QR codes providing access to additional reading material, interactive resources, and digital content — students can explore at their own pace.

Also included in every chapter: At a Glance (chapter summary), Keywords embedded in text, Next Level Up boxes (preview of what comes in higher grades), and What If? boxes with hypothetical scenarios that encourage ethical and creative thinking about science.

The 6 Biggest Changes in the New Class 9 Science Book

# What Changed Old Book New Book Impact
1 Earth Science added Not present Full chapter (Ch 13): Earth as a System Students learn Earth's spheres, biogeochemical cycles and climate for the first time at Class 9
2 Reproduction moved from Class 10 Class 10 book Ch 11: Reproduction in Class 9 NEET aspirants build Biology base one year earlier. Class 10 Biology changes as a result.
3 Simple Machines newly added No coverage at Class 9 Added to Ch 7: Work, Energy and Simple Machines Practical applications of Physics now included from Class 9 itself
4 Chapter 1 on scientific thinking Jumped straight into content Dedicated introductory chapter on how science works Students understand scientific method, models, estimation and language before diving into subject content
5 Mixtures gets its own chapter Part of "Is Matter Around Us Pure" Standalone Ch 5 on Mixtures and Separation Separation chemistry now gets full dedicated treatment — better Chemistry foundation
6 Integrated approach — no subject barriers Chapters felt like separate Physics, Chemistry, Biology sections All chapters blend multiple science disciplines Students see connections across Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science naturally

What This Means for JEE and NEET Aspirants Starting in Class 9

If you are in Class 9 and planning to appear for JEE or NEET, the new Exploration book is a significantly stronger foundation than the old Class 9 Science book. Here is what specifically helps:

Subject Area How the New Book Helps JEE/NEET Preparation
Physics (Chs 4, 6, 7, 10) Motion, Forces, Work-Energy, and Sound now treated with greater mathematical rigour and conceptual depth. The "Ready to Go Beyond" sections push into territory that directly previews Class 11 Physics.
Chemistry (Chs 5, 8, 9) Mole concept in Ch 9, Atomic Models in Ch 8, and Separation in Ch 5 now have dedicated space — not cramped into half-chapters. Better base for Class 11 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry.
Biology (Chs 2, 3, 11, 12) Reproduction (now in Class 9) and Classification give NEET aspirants a one-year head start on core NEET Biology chapters. NEET is 90% NCERT Biology — building these foundations early matters enormously.
Earth Science (Ch 13) Environmental science concepts that appear in NEET and some JEE papers are now formally introduced in Class 9 instead of being scattered across board-only chapters.
Competishun Tip: The "Ready to Go Beyond" sections in each chapter are specifically worth reading if you are targeting JEE or NEET. These sections deliberately bridge Class 9 content with competitive exam level thinking. Read them even if your school teacher skips them — they build exactly the conceptual depth that JEE and NEET require.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the name of the new NCERT Class 9 Science book for 2026-27?
The new NCERT Class 9 Science textbook for 2026-27 is called Exploration: Textbook of Science for Grade 9. It was first published in April 2026 (Chaitra 1948 in the Saka calendar). It replaces the old combined Class 9 Science book that students have been using for many years.
How many chapters are in the new NCERT Class 9 Science book?
The new book Exploration has 13 chapters. These cover Physics (Motion, Forces, Work-Energy, Sound), Chemistry (Mixtures, Atomic Structure, Atoms and Molecules), Biology (Cell, Tissues, Reproduction, Classification), and for the first time, Earth Science (Earth as a System). The book is 292 pages in total.
Is the new Class 9 Science book separate for Physics, Chemistry and Biology?
No. The new NCERT Class 9 Science book Exploration is a single integrated book — not three separate books. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science chapters are all part of one textbook, arranged in an integrated sequence. The book's philosophy is that these subject boundaries are artificial and the real world requires understanding connections across all science areas.
What is the biggest change in the new Class 9 Science book compared to the old one?
There are six major changes: (1) Earth Science is now a full chapter (was never in old Class 9 book), (2) Reproduction has been moved from Class 10 to Class 9, (3) Simple Machines are newly added to the Work and Energy chapter, (4) A dedicated Chapter 1 on how science works has been introduced, (5) Mixtures and Separation is now a standalone chapter, and (6) The entire pedagogical approach is new — with 10 new feature types embedded throughout every chapter that did not exist in the old book.
Is Gravitation still in the new Class 9 Science book?
Gravitation is no longer a standalone chapter as it was in the old Class 9 book. Gravitational concepts are now integrated into Chapter 6 (How Forces Affect Motion) and appear in advanced sections. The treatment of gravity as a force concept is maintained but it is woven into the broader forces chapter rather than given separate chapter status.
Is Reproduction really in Class 9 now? What happened to it in Class 10?
Yes. Reproduction (Chapter 11 in the new book) has been moved from Class 10 to Class 9 under the new NEP 2020 curriculum redesign. This means the Class 10 Biology content will also change accordingly in the new Class 10 books (expected in 2027-28). For NEET aspirants, this is good news — you build core reproduction biology knowledge one year earlier in Class 9 now.
What is Earth as a System in Chapter 13 about?
Chapter 13 — Earth as a System: Energy, Matter, and Life — is a completely new chapter that introduces Earth Science to Class 9 students for the first time. It covers Earth's major spheres (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere), energy flows through Earth's systems, biogeochemical cycles (like carbon and water cycles), and how physical and living systems are interconnected. This is aligned with global trends in science education that treat Earth as a single complex system.
Will CBSE Class 9 exams for 2026-27 be based on the new Exploration book?
Yes. CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to implement the new 2026-27 textbooks from this session. Class 9 CBSE internal and school-based examinations for 2026-27 will be based on the new Exploration book. Students using the old Class 9 Science book as their primary reference will be at a disadvantage as chapter names, content, and sequence have changed significantly.
