JoSAA Counselling 2027: Complete Guide to Registration, Choice Filling, Seat Allotment, Fees, Documents and Reporting
After the JEE result, your rank is only half the journey. The seat comes from JoSAA counselling 2027. This is the single, official process that allots seats in IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs together, based on your JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks. Miss a step here and a great rank can still end in no seat. This guide walks you through the whole process, from registration on josaa.nic.in to final reporting, in plain language.
All 2027 dates and amounts below are expected and tentative, drawn from the recent cycle. The official JoSAA 2027 schedule, business rules and fees are published only on josaa.nic.in, so always confirm there before acting.
What Is JoSAA and Which Institutes Does It Cover?
JoSAA stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is the body that runs the common counselling and seat allocation for the country's top government engineering institutes. Instead of chasing many separate admission processes, you fill one ordered list of choices and the system allots the best seat it can, round by round.
JoSAA covers four families of institutes in one process:
- IITs, entered through your JEE Advanced rank
- NITs, entered through your JEE Main rank
- IIITs (central and PPP), through JEE Main, note that IIIT Hyderabad admits separately
- GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes), through JEE Main, the widest-access group
JoSAA 2027 Expected Schedule: All Rounds
JoSAA usually opens registration in early June, soon after the JEE Advanced result, and runs several allotment rounds through June and July. The table shows the expected shape of the 2027 timeline, based on the recent cycle. Use it only for planning.
| Stage | Expected 2027 Window |
|---|---|
| Registration and choice filling opens | Early June 2027 |
| Mock seat allotment (usually two) | Mid June 2027 |
| Choice locking deadline | Mid June 2027 |
| Round 1 seat allotment | Mid June 2027 |
| Rounds 2 to 5 | Late June to mid July 2027 |
| Final round and admission confirmation | Mid to late July 2027 |
| CSAB special rounds (after JoSAA) | Late July to August 2027 |
| Takeaway: register early, use the mock rounds to adjust, and never miss the choice-locking deadline. All dates expected until the official JoSAA schedule. | |
Who Is Eligible: JEE Main Rank, JEE Advanced Rank, 75% Criteria
Eligibility depends on which institutes you want. In short, JEE Main opens NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats, and JEE Advanced additionally opens IIT seats. On top of the rank, there is a board eligibility rule you must satisfy.
| You want | You need |
|---|---|
| NIT / IIIT / GFTI seat | A valid JEE Main rank |
| IIT seat | A valid JEE Advanced rank (plus JEE Main to enter Advanced) |
| Board eligibility (General) | 75% aggregate in Class 12, or top 20 percentile of your board |
| Board eligibility (SC / ST / PwD) | 65% aggregate in Class 12, or top 20 percentile |
| Takeaway: rank gets you into the pool; the board percentage keeps you eligible. Confirm the exact 2027 rule in the official brochure. | |

Choice Filling: How Many, How to Order, Mock Rounds
Choice filling is where seats are won or lost. The number of choices is large, but the order is everything. The golden rule is simple: fill choices in the order you actually want them, from your dream option at the top to your safest option at the bottom, not by cutoff.
Build a three-tier list so you are covered in every situation:
Ambitious (top)
Options slightly better than your expected rank, in case cutoffs relax.
Realistic (middle)
Options that closed around your rank last year, your core list.
Safe (bottom)
Options that closed well after your rank, so you are never left seatless.
How the Seat Allotment Algorithm Works (Simple Example)
The system tries to give you the highest choice on your list that your rank can secure in that round. It checks your choices from top to bottom and stops at the first one where a seat is available for your rank, category and quota.
This is exactly why the order matters. A seat you did not really want, placed above one you did, can trap you. Order the list by true preference and the algorithm works in your favour.
Seat Acceptance Fee, Partial Fee and Refund Rules
There is no fee to register or fill choices. You pay only after a seat is allotted, as the seat acceptance fee. This amount is adjusted later against your admission fee at the institute.
| Category | Seat Acceptance Fee (recent cycle, indicative) |
|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC-NCL | About Rs 30,000 |
| SC / ST / PwD | About Rs 15,000 |
| Non-refundable processing portion | About Rs 5,000 (included in the above) |
| Takeaway: pay the seat acceptance fee within the round deadline or the seat is cancelled. A small processing portion is non-refundable. Confirm exact 2027 amounts on josaa.nic.in. | |
Document Upload and Online Reporting
After paying the fee, you complete online reporting by uploading scanned documents for verification. If the verifier raises a query, you must respond within the deadline. Once everything is cleared, your seat is confirmed for that round.
- Pay the seat acceptance fee online
- Upload the required scanned documents in the correct format and size
- Respond to any verification query before the deadline
- Confirm and keep the acknowledgement safe
Freeze, Float and Slide: What to Choose Each Round
When you accept a seat, you pick one of three options that decide whether you try for an upgrade in later rounds.
| Option | What it means | Choose when |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Keep this seat, no upgrade attempts | You are happy and do not want to risk change |
| Float | Accept now, stay open to any better college or branch | You want the best possible upgrade anywhere on your list |
| Slide | Accept now, open to a better branch in the same institute | You love the institute but want a better branch there |
| Takeaway: Freeze locks it, Float chases the best upgrade, Slide chases a better branch in the same place. Choose by how much you still want to move. | ||
Withdrawal, Exit Rules and What Happens After Round 5
If you decide not to continue, you can withdraw your seat before the withdrawal deadline of the last relevant round. A portion of the fee may be deducted on withdrawal, and the rest is refunded as per the rules. Read the withdrawal terms carefully before you click.
After the final JoSAA round, vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats are filled through CSAB special rounds, which need a fresh separate registration. IITs do not take part in CSAB. If you still want a seat and have a valid rank, CSAB is your backup route.
Biggest JoSAA Mistakes Students Make Every Year
Most lost seats are not about rank. They are about avoidable process errors. Steer clear of these:
- Filling too few choices and being left seatless in a round
- Ordering by cutoff instead of preference, getting trapped in an unwanted seat
- Missing the choice-locking deadline (unlocked choices can auto-lock as they are)
- Not paying the seat acceptance fee in time, which cancels the seat
- Uploading wrong-format or blurry documents and failing verification
- Ignoring the mock rounds that could have fixed the list
- Choosing Freeze too early and losing a possible upgrade

The process is winnable with a smart, well-ordered choice list. Use the Competishun cutoff and rank tools to check realistic NIT, IIIT and GFTI options for your rank before you lock choices.
