How to Get Admission in NIT Through JEE Main 2027: Step-by-Step Process from Exam to Seat Allotment and Reporting

Full path · exam to reporting

Getting into an NIT is not one exam and done. It is a clear seven-step path, from registering for JEE Main to physically reporting at your allotted NIT. Miss the shape of the path and even a good rank can slip. This guide lays out how to get admission in NIT through JEE Main 2027 in simple steps, with the percentile targets, the 75% rule, JoSAA, quotas, fees and a full timeline.

The good news: there are 31 NITs across India, so a wide range of ranks can land a seat with the right strategy. All 2027 dates and figures below are indicative and expected, so confirm the official details on nta.ac.in and josaa.nic.in.

Big relief: NIT admission needs only JEE Main, not JEE Advanced. A strong Main rank plus board eligibility puts you in the running for all 31 NITs through one JoSAA process.

The Complete NIT Admission Path in One View

Before the details, here is the whole journey at a glance. Each step feeds the next, so treat them in order.

  • Step 1: Register and appear for JEE Main
  • Step 2: Hit a score and percentile that opens NIT seats
  • Step 3: Meet the 75% or top 20 percentile board rule
  • Step 4: Register and fill choices in JoSAA
  • Step 5: Get a seat in an allotment round and accept it
  • Step 6: Complete document verification and online reporting
  • Step 7: Use CSAB special rounds as a backup if needed

Step 1: JEE Main Registration and Eligibility

The path starts with JEE Main, conducted by NTA in two sessions a year, with the best of the two counting. You register online, choose your exam cities, and appear in Paper 1 for B.E. or B.Tech admission to NITs.

  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for B.Tech
  • Two sessions: appear in one or both; the better result is used
  • Attempts and age: NTA allows a limited number of consecutive years; check the current bulletin
  • Registration: online on the official NTA JEE Main portal
Confirm official rules: the exact attempt, age and subject requirements for 2027 are set by NTA. Always verify them in the official information bulletin before applying.

Step 2: Score and Percentile Targets for NIT Admission

Your JEE Main percentile decides which NITs and branches are realistic. There is no single cutoff; it varies by branch, category and quota. The table gives indicative General category targets to aim for.

TargetIndicative Percentile (General)
Top 3 NIT CSE (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal)99+ percentile
Other top-tier NIT CSE97 to 99 percentile
Mid-tier NIT CSE / top-NIT core branches94 to 97 percentile
Mid and lower-tier NIT core branches88 to 94 percentile
Lowest NIT seats (remote NITs, home state)Below 88 percentile
Takeaway: aim high for CSE, but know that core branches and home state seats open a much wider percentile range. Indicative only, verify on josaa.nic.in.

Step 3: The 75% or Top 20 Percentile Board Requirement

A JEE Main rank alone is not enough. To take an NIT seat through JoSAA you must also meet a board eligibility rule. This trips up many students who focus only on rank.

CategoryBoard Requirement
General / EWS / OBC-NCL75% aggregate in Class 12, or top 20 percentile of your board
SC / ST / PwD65% aggregate in Class 12, or top 20 percentile
Takeaway: clear the board rule as well as the rank, or the seat is not confirmed. Confirm the exact 2027 rule in the official brochure.
If you fall short: the improvement exam route exists, and the top 20 percentile path can help. A dedicated guide on the 75% rule is linked in Related Reads.

Step 4: JoSAA Registration and Choice Filling

Once results are out, NIT seats are filled only through JoSAA counselling, the common process for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. You register with your JEE Main application number and password, then fill an ordered list of NIT (and other) choices.

1

Register

Log in on josaa.nic.in with your JEE Main credentials.

2

Fill choices

Add NIT courses in strict order of your true preference, top to bottom.

3

Use mock rounds

Check the two mock allotments and adjust your order.

4

Lock

Lock your choices before the deadline and save the confirmation.

Order by preference: place your most wanted NIT and branch at the top and your safe options at the bottom. The system gives you the highest choice your rank can secure.

Step 5: Seat Allotment Rounds and Acceptance

JoSAA runs several rounds. In each round you may get a seat based on your rank, category and quota. If you get a seat, you accept it by paying the seat acceptance fee and choosing Freeze, Float or Slide.

  • Freeze: keep this NIT seat, no upgrade
  • Float: accept now, stay open to a better NIT or branch
  • Slide: accept now, open to a better branch in the same NIT
Deadline matters: pay the seat acceptance fee within the round window, or the allotment is treated as refused and the seat is cancelled.

Step 6: Document Verification and Online Reporting

After accepting, you complete online reporting by uploading scanned documents. If a verifier raises a query, you fix it within the deadline. Then, after the rounds, you physically report to your allotted NIT with originals for final admission.

  • Upload admit card, rank card, Class 10 and 12 documents, ID, photos, category certificate
  • Respond to any verification query quickly
  • Carry originals plus photocopies to physical reporting
Prepare early: a ready document folder makes reporting fast. A full category-wise checklist is linked in Related Reads.

Step 7: CSAB Special Rounds as a Backup

If you did not get an NIT seat in JoSAA, or want to try for a better one, CSAB special rounds fill the vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats after JoSAA ends. This needs a fresh, separate registration and follows its own eligibility rules.

Do not give up early: many good NIT seats open in CSAB. If your rank is in range, register for CSAB and treat it as a real second chance.

Reservation and Quotas: Category, Home State, Female, PwD

Several provisions shape who gets which seat. Understanding them helps you plan your choices smartly.

Quota / provisionWhat it does
Category reservationReserved seats for EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST with category-wise ranking
Home state quotaAbout half the seats in each NIT for home state candidates, at more relaxed ranks
Female supernumeraryExtra seats to improve gender diversity, helping female candidates
PwD (horizontal)Relaxation within each category for eligible candidates
Takeaway: home state quota is often the single biggest advantage. Use it by placing your home NIT correctly in your choice list.

NIT Fee Structure and Scholarship Options

NIT fees are moderate compared with many private colleges, with tuition plus separate hostel and mess charges, and they vary by institute. Importantly, fee waivers and scholarships exist for eligible income groups and reserved categories, which can reduce the cost significantly.

Check current fees: exact tuition and hostel charges change over time, so confirm them on your specific NIT's official page, and look up central and state scholarship schemes you may qualify for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentile is needed for NIT admission through JEE Main 2027?
It depends on branch, category and quota. A top NIT CSE seat usually needs around 99+ percentile in the General Other State pool, while core branches at mid or lower-tier NITs can open up around 88 to 95 percentile. Home state and reserved-category seats need lower percentiles. These are indicative from recent trends; confirm on josaa.nic.in.
Can I get an NIT without JEE Advanced?
Yes. NIT admission is based only on your JEE Main rank through JoSAA counselling. JEE Advanced is required for IITs, not for NITs. So a good JEE Main rank plus board eligibility is enough to compete for NIT seats.
Is 75% in Class 12 compulsory for NIT admission?
NIT admission has a board eligibility rule, commonly 75% aggregate in Class 12 for General, with 65% for SC, ST and PwD, or being in the top 20 percentile of your board. The exact rule for 2027 will be confirmed in the official brochure, so verify before counselling.
How many NITs are there in India?
There are 31 National Institutes of Technology across India, spread over almost every state. Together they offer a large number of B.Tech seats each year through JoSAA counselling, which is why NITs are a realistic target for a wide range of ranks.
What is the annual fee of an NIT?
NIT tuition fees vary by institute and can change, and there are separate hostel and mess charges. Fees are moderate compared with many private colleges, and scholarships and fee waivers exist for eligible categories and income levels. Check the current fee on the specific NIT's official page.
Is there a female quota in NIT admission?
NITs use a female supernumerary provision to improve gender diversity, which reserves a share of seats for female candidates in addition to the regular seats. This can help female candidates get a seat at a rank that would be tight in the gender-neutral pool. Confirm the exact provision for 2027 in the official rules.
Can I get an NIT seat in CSAB after JoSAA?
Yes. After JoSAA ends, CSAB special rounds fill vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats. If you did not get a seat, or want to try for a better one, CSAB is a genuine backup route that needs a fresh separate registration. Read the CSAB eligibility rules carefully.
How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main?
JEE Main is generally allowed for a limited number of consecutive years, with two sessions each year, and the best of the two sessions counts. The exact attempt and age rules are set by NTA, so confirm the current eligibility in the official information bulletin for 2027.
What documents are needed for NIT admission?
You need your JEE Main admit card and rank card, Class 10 certificate for date of birth, Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate, a photo ID, passport photos, category certificate if applicable, and the seat acceptance fee receipt. A detailed category-wise checklist is linked in Related Reads.
Is there a management quota in NITs?
No. NITs do not have a management or donation quota. Every seat is filled purely on merit through JoSAA and CSAB counselling based on your JEE Main rank and category. Any claim of a paid management seat in an NIT should be treated as false.
