Chapter-Wise or Year-Wise PYQs: Which Should You Solve First?

Quick answer

Solve JEE Main PYQs chapter-wise first, then year-wise. Chapter-wise practice builds concept-to-question skill while you study or revise. Year-wise full papers build speed and exam temperament, so they work best in the last two to three months, once most of the syllabus is done. In between, combine both.

Every JEE Main aspirant eventually faces this choice: open a chapter and solve all its previous year questions, or pick a full shift paper and attempt it like the real exam? Both are useful. The real question is which one comes first, and when to switch.

This guide gives you a clear answer, shows you the signs that tell you it is time to switch, and lays out a month-by-month plan that uses both formats in the right order for JEE Main 2027.

Chapter-Wise vs Year-Wise: What Each One Does

Chapter-wise PYQsYear-wise PYQs
What you solveAll questions from one chapter, across yearsOne full shift paper, all subjects
Main skill builtConcept to question, pattern recognitionSpeed, stamina, section switching
Best timeWhile studying and revising chaptersLast 2 to 3 months
Shows youWeak concepts inside a chapterWeak subjects, time leaks, silly mistakes
Feels likeFocused practiceThe real exam
They are not competitors. Chapter-wise builds the skill; year-wise tests whether you can use it under pressure.

Why Chapter-Wise Comes First

  • It needs only one chapter done: you can start the day you finish a chapter, months before the exam
  • Patterns become obvious: seeing ten questions on one concept back to back teaches you how NTA frames it
  • Mistakes are easy to fix: a wrong answer points to a specific concept you just studied
  • Early full papers mislead: attempting a full paper with half the syllabus done gives a low score and little useful feedback
Think of it this way: chapter-wise PYQs are training sessions, and year-wise papers are match practice. You train first, then you play matches. For the full method, see How to Practise JEE Main Chapter-Wise PYQs Effectively.

When to Switch to Year-Wise Papers

Do not switch on a fixed date. Switch when these signs show up.

Ready for Year-Wise Papers?

Syllabus

About 80% of chapters completed and practised chapter-wise

Accuracy

Around 75 to 80% on chapter-wise sets in most chapters

Timing

About 2 to 3 minutes per question in chapter-wise sets

If two of these three are true, start one full paper a week

Month-by-Month Plan Using Both

For a JEE Main 2027 aspirant writing Session 1 in late January, a balanced plan looks like this.

PeriodChapter-wiseYear-wise
Till OctoberMain focus: every chapter you finish or reviseNone yet
NovemberRevision of high-weightage chapters1 full paper a week (2023 or 2024)
DecemberOnly weak chapters2 full papers a week (2024, 2025)
January (before exam)Your error book only3 to 4 papers a week (2025, 2026)
Keep one or two 2026 papers untouched for the final week, so you have fresh realistic practice.

Rules for Year-Wise Papers

A year-wise paper is only useful if you treat it like the real exam.

  • Full 3 hours, no breaks: attempt at your actual exam shift time if you can
  • No solutions during the paper: mark doubtful questions and move on, as you would in the exam
  • Prefer recent years: 2025 and 2026 match the current pattern exactly, with all numericals compulsory
  • Analyse for as long as you attempted: every wrong, skipped and slow question goes into your error book
  • Watch fast methods: even for correct answers, a quicker method can save minutes next time

Exceptions: Late Starters and Weak Chapters

SituationWhat to do
Less than 6 weeks leftChapter-wise only for high-weightage and weak chapters; the rest of the time on 2025 and 2026 full papers
Syllabus done, never solved PYQsTwo weeks of fast chapter-wise practice on recent years, then switch to full papers
A chapter keeps costing marks in full papersGo back to chapter-wise PYQs for that chapter, even late
Strong student, early startChapter-wise for all 8 years, then full papers from 2023 onward

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I solve JEE Main PYQs chapter-wise or year-wise first?
Chapter-wise first. Solve each chapter's PYQs as you finish or revise it, so concepts turn into exam skill. Switch to year-wise full papers once most of the syllabus is done, usually in the last two to three months before the exam.
When should I start year-wise PYQ papers for JEE Main?
Start full year-wise papers when you have completed and practised most of the syllabus chapter-wise, typically about two to three months before the exam. Starting too early leads to low scores from unfinished chapters and very little useful learning.
Is year-wise PYQ practice the same as a mock test?
Very close. A full year-wise shift paper attempted in three hours under exam conditions works like a mock test, with the advantage that it is a real NTA paper. Analyse it exactly the way you would analyse a mock.
Can I do chapter-wise and year-wise PYQs together?
Yes, in the middle phase. Keep solving chapter-wise PYQs for chapters you are revising, and add one full year-wise paper a week. In the final weeks, flip the ratio so year-wise papers become the main practice.
Which years should I keep for full year-wise papers?
Keep the most recent years, especially 2025 and 2026, for full timed papers because they follow the current pattern exactly. Use older years mainly for chapter-wise practice.
What if I am starting PYQs very late?
If you have less than six weeks, do chapter-wise PYQs only for your high-weightage and weak chapters, and spend the rest of your time on full papers from 2025 and 2026. Do not try to cover every chapter chapter-wise in a very short window.
