7 Common Mistakes Students Make While Solving JEE Main PYQs
The most common PYQ mistakes are: reading solutions too early, solving only easy questions, ignoring timing, never re-attempting, using old or out-of-syllabus questions blindly, starting full papers too early, and not analysing. Fix these and the same PYQs will give you far more marks.
Two students can solve the same PYQs and get very different results. The difference is usually not effort, it is how they practise.
Here are the seven mistakes we see most often in JEE Main PYQ practice, why they hurt, and exactly how to fix each one.
The 7 Mistakes at a Glance
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Looking at the solution too early | Give every question a genuine attempt first |
| 2 | Solving only the questions you like | Do every question in the set, especially hard ones |
| 3 | Never using a timer | Time every set once the chapter is understood |
| 4 | Never re-attempting wrong questions | Re-solve them after 7 days and 30 days |
| 5 | Solving out-of-syllabus questions | Check older questions against the 2027 syllabus |
| 6 | Starting full papers too early | Do chapter-wise first, full papers in the last months |
| 7 | Not analysing mistakes | Tag every error and keep an error book |
Mistakes 1 to 3: How You Attempt
1. Looking at the solution too early
Reading a solution feels like learning, but your brain only remembers what it struggled with. Attempt first, even if you only get halfway.
2. Solving only the questions you like
Skipping hard questions hides your real gaps until the exam. The questions you avoid are usually the ones worth the most practice.
3. Never using a timer
JEE Main gives you a little over 2 minutes per question. Untimed practice builds understanding, but timed practice builds the speed the exam needs.
Mistakes 4 and 5: What You Practise
4. Never re-attempting wrong questions
A question you got wrong once will likely trip you again unless you re-solve it. Re-attempts after a week and a month turn mistakes into marks.
5. Solving out-of-syllabus questions
NTA trimmed the syllabus from 2024. Some older questions are no longer relevant; check them against the JEE Main 2027 syllabus before spending time on them.
Mistakes 6 and 7: When and How You Review
6. Starting full papers too early
A full paper with half the syllabus done gives a low score and little useful feedback. See Chapter-Wise or Year-Wise PYQs.
7. Not analysing mistakes
Without analysis, practice just repeats your mistakes. Learn the method in How to Analyse Your JEE Main PYQ Practice.
