JEE Main 2027 Application Form: Category, Documents and Photo Rules

Quick answer

Use only the official portal for the JEE Main 2027 Session 1 form, and go over every detail before you hit submit. The application window runs from 24 October to 22 November 2026, up to 11:50 PM, with a late fee window from 23 to 26 November 2026 and a correction window from 27 to 29 November 2026. Keep ready a recent colour photograph, a signature on white paper, your Class 10 certificate, and your category details. Take real care over your category, because the original certificate gets checked at counselling, and getting it wrong now can turn into a serious problem later. Ahead in this guide you will find the dates, the documents, the photo and signature rules, the category decision, the Class 12 status, and the payment troubles students genuinely run into.

At first glance an application form looks like paperwork. In JEE Main, though, it behaves like a first exam in disguise, because every field you type becomes part of your record. Your name, your date of birth, your category, your paper choice, your exam cities, your photograph: all of it travels with you, from the form to the admit card, then to the result, and finally to counselling. Get a practice test question wrong and you lose a few marks. Get the form wrong and you can lose a whole attempt, since some fields can never be changed afterwards, while others open up only during a short correction window.

That is the reason this guide was written. It does not just copy dates out of a notice. Instead it walks you through the form itself, step by step: what to keep ready before you begin, what every upload is supposed to look like, where students usually slip up, and what to do when something goes wrong. Read it once before you open the portal, and keep it open beside you while you fill the form. The ten minutes you spend checking here can save you weeks of trouble later.

Before anything else, one ground rule for this whole guide: whenever this guide and the portal disagree, the official portal and the information bulletin win. This guide reports the requirements as published for the 2027 session, and wherever secondary sources disagree, it says so plainly and tells you to follow the portal. So if something on the portal looks different from what you have read here, go with the portal.

Session 1 Dates You Must Not Miss

Session 1 does not give you much room. The main application window lasts about a month, and each window after it is shorter than the last: four days for the late fee window, three days for corrections. Work backwards from the main deadline rather than forwards from the opening day. The students who run into trouble are, almost without exception, the ones who meant to fill the form in the last week and then discovered a missing document or a stuck payment.

EventSession 1 dateWhat it means for you
Application window24 October to 22 November 2026, up to 11:50 PMFill and submit the form inside this window to avoid the late fee
Late fee window23 to 26 November 2026You can still apply, but with an additional late fee
Correction window27 to 29 November 2026Some fields can be corrected; not everything can be changed
Session 1 exam days20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027Your exact day and shift come on your admit card
These are the published dates for JEE Main 2027 Session 1. Session 2 will have a separate, later window, and its dates will appear on the official portal when it opens.

Two habits will keep you safe here. One: wrap the form up a few days before the main deadline, so a rejected photo or a stuck payment still leaves you room inside the main window. Two: never build your plan around the late fee window. It is a safety net, not a timetable, and safety nets used as timetables have a habit of tearing at the worst possible moment.

Think of it this way: the main window is your real deadline, while the late fee window and the correction window are rescue options, not plans. A form finished early is a form you can still fix.

Fill the Form in This Order

There is a fixed order to this form, and students who follow it rarely have to start over halfway. The sequence below matches the official process: registration first, then the application itself, then uploads, then payment, then the confirmation page. Hold off on payment until your uploads are correct. Fixing a paid form with a wrong upload is far harder than fixing an unpaid draft.

From registration to confirmation page

1

Register

Head to the official portal, pick new registration, and type in your name, date of birth, mobile number and email address. Write down the application number right away.

Your login for everything
2

Fill details

Log in with the application number and fill personal, academic, category, paper, medium and exam city details carefully.

Slow down here
3

Upload and live photo

Capture the live photograph, then upload the scanned photograph, signature and certificates in the required formats.

Most rejections happen here
4

Pay the fee

Pay online through the portal only, using net banking, card or UPI, and wait for the payment success screen.

Never on another site
5

Download confirmation

Download and save the confirmation page at once, and keep a printed copy with your records.

Your proof of submission

Three points in that sequence deserve extra attention. One: from Session 2 to the admit card, your application number is the login for everything that follows, so keep it somewhere you genuinely cannot lose. Two: send in exactly one application form, because two forms from the same candidate muddle the record and can end in rejection. Three: only the confirmation page proves your form went through. No confirmation page means no submitted form, no matter what the payment screen showed.

When you reach final submit, slow down and use the preview screen properly, the way it was designed to be used. Read your name letter by letter. Read your date of birth digit by digit. Check your category, your paper, your medium, and your city preferences. Open each uploaded file and look at it. Ask anyone who ended up in the correction window, and their story usually starts the same way: they skipped the preview.

Documents Checklist Before You Start

Have every file ready and double-checked before you even open the portal. The most common reason a form stalls halfway is not a difficult question. It is a photograph that is too large, a certificate that is not scanned, or a signature that is on ruled paper. Get the files ready on the very device you will use for the form, give them clear names, and open each one to check it instead of trusting the file name.

DocumentFormat and sizeNotes
Recent passport-size photographJPG or JPEG, 10 KB to 200 KB, 3.5 cm by 4.5 cmA recent colour photo on a white background, with roughly 80 percent of the face, ears included, visible, and no mask
Live photographCaptured during form fillingWebcam on a computer, or QR code scan with a phone or tablet camera; white background, good light
SignatureJPG or JPEG, 10 KB to 100 KBBlack or blue ink on plain white paper, clearly legible; check the portal for exact dimensions
Class 10 certificate or marksheetPDF, 50 KB to 300 KBYour name and date of birth come from this document, so the details must match to the letter
Disability or UDID certificate, if applicablePDF, 50 KB to 300 KBOnly if it applies to you; keep it ready before you start
Valid photo identityAs the portal asksVerification goes smoothest with Aadhaar, though other government photo identity documents work too
Category details, if applicableDetails ready before fillingSelect the category you can prove; the original certificate is checked at counselling
If the portal shows a different size limit for any file, go by the portal. The portal and the information bulletin have the last say.

Swipe the table sideways to see all columns

A note on the signature size in that table. Most reports of the 2027 requirements put the signature at 10 KB to 100 KB, and that is the figure used here. A few older guides still show a smaller range from previous years. If the portal shows you a different range, that range is the one that counts, and no guide, this one included, overrides it. The same honesty applies to the signature dimensions: published guides disagree on them, so this guide deliberately does not print a dimension, and you should check the exact dimensions shown on the portal itself.

Keep your mobile number and email address handy as well. Registration and verification both use them, and every later message, admit card included, depends on them. Pick a number and an address you will still own in January and afterwards, not a borrowed number or an inbox you hardly ever open.

Photo Rules That Get Forms Flagged

No upload causes as much form trouble as the photograph, and the reason is straightforward: students see it as a formality, while the system sees it as identity. On exam day, the person in front of the invigilator gets matched against the photograph on the form, so an unclear photograph becomes a problem that walks right into the exam hall with you.

  • Recent and in colour: use a recent colour photograph, not an old one and not a black and white one. A photograph taken within the last few months is the safe choice.
  • White background: the background must be white, with even lighting and no shadows falling across the face.
  • Face clearly visible: about 80 percent of the face must be visible, including the ears, with no mask. Do not wear a cap or sunglasses.
  • Front facing, natural look: face the camera directly, with a neutral expression. Avoid heavy filters that change the background colour or the skin tone.
  • Right file, right name: save the file in JPG or JPEG format, between 10 KB and 200 KB, and name it clearly as your photograph, as the portal instructs.

The live photograph works on the same idea, just through a different method. It is captured during form filling, not uploaded from an old album, which is exactly why it exists: it proves that the person filling the form is the person in the photograph. Find good light, face the camera, and take it with care rather than rushing past it. Should it come out dark or blurry, take it again before you move on.

Here is one last check that costs nothing at all: once uploaded, open the photograph inside the form preview and view it at full size. Something that looked fine as a tiny thumbnail can turn out cropped, rotated or blurry when enlarged, and the preview is the final spot where a fix costs nothing.

Signature Rules

A signature seems far too simple to mess up, which is precisely why so many students do. Sign on plain white paper with black or blue ink, keep the signature clear and legible, and scan it cleanly. A signature on ruled paper, in an odd colour, or photographed at a slant can all draw a rejection, and spotting a rejected signature late leaves you with exactly the sort of problem the final week cannot absorb.

Keep the file in JPG or JPEG format, between 10 KB and 100 KB, as reported for the 2027 session, and check the exact dimensions on the portal, since published guides disagree on the dimensions and this guide does not print a figure it cannot stand behind. Name the file clearly as your signature, as the portal instructs, and preview it after upload the same way you preview the photograph. Think of it as your personal mark on the form, and make sure it actually looks like one.

A small habit worth copying: sign three or four times on one sheet, choose the clearest attempt, and scan only that one. A signature practised once, in a hurry, on the only sheet in the house, is how most bad signature uploads happen.

Category: Choose Once, Choose Right

One careless click on the category field can do more lasting damage than any other, since the form accepts whatever you pick today, while counselling verifies your proof months later. By that point a wrong pick has stopped being a small correction: it can cost you a seat, an admission, or both. So choose unhurriedly, and only what you can prove.

CategoryWhat to keep readyWhat a wrong choice risks
GeneralNo category certificate neededNo risk at all, provided no reserved category is claimed
Gen-EWSA valid EWS certificate in the prescribed formatLoss of the EWS claim at counselling if the certificate is missing or invalid
OBC-NCLA valid OBC-NCL certificate in the prescribed formatLoss of the OBC-NCL claim at counselling if the certificate is missing, expired, or in the wrong format
SC or STA valid caste certificate in the prescribed formatLoss of the reserved claim at counselling if the certificate cannot be produced in original
PwD or PwBD, if applicableA valid disability or UDID certificateLoss of the PwD benefits and facilities if the certificate is missing or does not match the claim
Seat allocation and admission are where original certificates get checked, not the form stage. What you select on the form has to match the certificate you will show then.

Swipe the table sideways to see all columns

Three habits will keep your category choice safe. First, never select a reserved category because someone told you it improves your chances. It only improves your chances if you can prove it with a valid certificate at counselling. Second, check the validity and the format of your certificate now, not in the counselling week, because a certificate in the wrong format is a problem you can still fix today. Third, if your category situation is complicated, for example a certificate under renewal or a recent change in status, check the information bulletin and, if needed, ask the official helpdesk before you submit, because a guess on category is the one guess this form punishes more harshly than any other.

If you are from Jammu and Kashmir, Assam or Meghalaya and do not hold an Aadhaar card, the guidelines let you use other valid government photo identity documents. That rule exists so that one missing document never blocks a genuine candidate, which is worth remembering before you panic over a missing card.

Class 12 Status: Appearing or Passed

The Class 12 status field confuses students every year, because both appearing and passed students use the same form, but they fill this part differently. Once you see it, the rule is straightforward: the form asks for your true status on the day you fill it, not the status you hope to hold by exam day.

  • Appearing in 2027: pick the appearing status, then enter your board and roll number details as the form asks. Your school enrollment details back this choice up.
  • Already passed: select the passed status and give your passing year and result details as the form asks.
  • Name and date of birth: both have to match your Class 10 certificate to the letter, since that document anchors your personal details.
  • Board and subjects: enter your board, your subjects, and your school details carefully, because these travel with your record to counselling.

Should your case sit awkwardly between the two boxes, say as a private candidate, an improvement case, or after a board change, resist guessing. Start with the eligibility section of the information bulletin, and turn to the official helpdesk if it leaves the question open. A status field filled on a guess can shadow the entire admission process.

In short: appearing means appearing, passed means passed, and both must be backed by the documents you can actually produce. Here, honesty beats optimism.

Three Tools for the Months After the Form

Sending in the form marks the start of the January attempt, not the end of preparation. What happens in the weeks between the form and the exam matters even more than the form, and three tools do that heavy lifting: unique PYQ practice, chapter-wise PYQ practice with video solutions, and a full mock test series for January.

None of these tools stands in for the form itself. They are what the form is for: they turn a submitted application into a prepared attempt. Fill the form correctly first, then let the preparation tools do the work they were built for.

Payment Problems and What to Do

Of all the steps, payment is the one where staying calm matters most, because the moment money is involved, every small delay starts to feel like a disaster. In most cases it is not a disaster. It is a delay, and delays have a procedure. Follow the procedure instead of reacting to the fear.

  • Pay only on the official portal: never pay through any other website, link, or agent, however official it looks. The official portal is the only payment route.
  • Wait before paying again: when money leaves your account yet no confirmation page shows up, resist paying again straight away. Look at your application status again after a few hours first.
  • Keep every transaction detail: save the transaction ID, the payment reference, and screenshots of the payment screen. These are your evidence if you need help.
  • Use the official helpdesk: should the status stay stuck, reach the official helpdesk with your application number and transaction details in hand, rather than turning to unofficial groups.
  • Confirm before you relax: your form is submitted only when the confirmation page is generated and downloaded. Until then, keep checking.

Panic-driven double payment is the worst payment mistake you can make. Paying a second time while the first payment is still processing leaves you chasing two transactions instead of one, and any refund for a genuinely failed payment returns to the same account through the banking process anyway. Waiting here is not doing nothing. It is the correct procedure, and it looks after your money far better than rushing does.

The Correction Window: 27 to 29 November 2026

From 27 to 29 November 2026, the correction window opens for genuine mistakes, not for a second go at the form. Just a few fields can be altered in it, and the whole window lasts only three days. Think of it as a safety net with a few holes in it, rather than a second chance to submit the form.

If you already know about a mistake, use the window on the very day it opens. A correction window left to its final day carries the same last-day dangers as the main window: sluggish portals, uploads that fail, and no time left to repair a repair. And if you find a mistake that the correction window does not allow you to change, contact the official helpdesk at once instead of assuming it will resolve itself. Some problems do have official remedies, but not one of them gets better while you wait.

Put simply: a form checked properly before submission hardly ever needs the correction window. Your preview screen is the real correction window, and using it costs nothing.

Common Mistakes That Cost an Attempt

Every year, the same mistakes return, and every year they are avoidable. Read this table as a checklist, and check yourself against each row before you submit.

MistakeWhat it costs youHow to avoid it
Waiting for the last dayNo time left for a rejected upload or a stuck paymentFinish the form a few days before the main deadline
Wrong category selectionLoss of the reserved claim at counsellingSelect only the category you can prove with a valid certificate
Old or unclear photographFlagged form, identity trouble on exam dayRecent colour photo, white background, face clearly visible
Skipping the previewSpelling and detail errors that survive submissionRead every field and open every upload in the preview
Paying on an unofficial linkMoney lost, form never submittedPay only on the official portal, and keep the confirmation page
Paying twice in panicTwo transactions to chase instead of oneWait, re-check status, then act on the official procedure
Submitting more than one formConfusion in the record, risk of rejectionSubmit exactly one form, and keep its application number safe

Run through every row once before final submission. A form measured against this table is one you can stand behind.

If one line from this whole guide stays with you, let it be this: the form is not paperwork to rush through. It is the first official record of your JEE Main 2027 attempt, and it deserves the same care you give to a paper itself. Fill it slowly, check it twice, and submit it early.

Official Links

For the JEE Main 2027 form, notices and updates, stick to these official portals alone. Treat any other link that asks for your application details or your fee as suspicious.

  • Official JEE Main Portal: jeemain.nta.nic.in: registration, form, admit card, and notices.
  • NTA Official Website: nta.ac.in: the National Testing Agency website.

No notice PDF link is printed here, because no direct official notice PDF URL was verified for this guide. Open the notices from the official portal itself, and treat any PDF forwarded from elsewhere as unverified until the portal confirms it.

Fill the Form Right, Then Focus on the Paper

Check your documents, select your category with care, preview every field, and submit early. Then turn your full attention to the preparation that actually decides your rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the JEE Main 2027 Session 1 application form close?
Session 1 applications stay open from 24 October to 22 November 2026, till 11:50 PM, and a late fee window runs after that, from 23 to 26 November 2026. Leaving it to the final day is risky: a rejected upload or a failed payment at that point leaves no window at all to set things right.
What photograph and signature sizes does the JEE Main 2027 form ask for?
The widely reported 2027 requirements are: a recent colour passport-size photograph in JPG or JPEG format, 10 KB to 200 KB, 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm, on a white background, with about 80 percent of the face visible including the ears and no mask; and a signature in JPG or JPEG format, 10 KB to 100 KB, signed in black or blue ink on white paper. If the limit you see on the portal is different when you sit down to fill the form, go with what the portal shows, and cross-check the information bulletin too.
What is the live photograph in the JEE Main 2027 form?
You capture the live photograph midway through filling the form, either with a computer webcam or by scanning a QR code through a phone or tablet camera. Keep the background white and the light good, with roughly 80 percent of your face, ears included, visible and no mask on. Remember it is distinct from the scanned passport-size photograph: the form asks for both, each on its own.
Do I upload my category certificate with the JEE Main 2027 form?
Take your time over the category field. The original category certificate is checked at the time of seat allocation and admission, so a wrong selection now creates trouble later even if the form is accepted today. Have the certificate details in hand, and pick only the category you can back up with a valid certificate, then check the information bulletin for the exact format requirements.
I am appearing in Class 12 in 2027. What do I select in the form?
Choose the appearing status, then enter your board and roll number details just as the form requests. Those who have passed already enter their passing year and result details in its place. Make sure your name and date of birth line up with your Class 10 certificate, which serves as the source for your personal details. For an unusual case, the eligibility section of the information bulletin is the place to check.
What should I do if the fee is deducted but no confirmation page appears?
Hold off on paying a second time. Give it a few hours and check your application status again first, since a payment sometimes takes a while to show up on the portal. Keep your transaction details safe, and contact the official helpdesk if the status is still unresolved. Only after the status stays failed should you consider paying again, and always keep the final confirmation page as proof.
Can I correct the JEE Main 2027 form after submitting it?
Yes, though only inside the correction window, open from 27 to 29 November 2026 for Session 1, and only a handful of fields can be altered. That is precisely what makes the preview step before final submit worth the effort: run through each field, each spelling, and each uploaded file a final time, since a few things can never be put right later.
