Many strong students lose their chance not on the paper, but on a small eligibility slip, a wrong Class 12 year, an exhausted attempt, or missing the top 2.5 lakh cut. The Five Eligibility Conditions in One Table

Criterion 1: Top 2,50,000 in JEE Main and the Category-Wise Split

This is the first gate. You must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the B.E./B.Tech Paper 1 of JEE Main 2027, counting all categories together. But the 2.5 lakh is not a single open list; it is divided by fixed category percentages, and you are shortlisted within your own category's share.

The percentages are: 40.5% OPEN, 10% GEN-EWS, 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, with a 5% PwD horizontal reservation inside each category. Applying these to 2,50,000 gives the indicative numbers below.

Criterion 2: Age Limit and Relaxation

There is a date-of-birth condition for JEE Advanced, and the reference date moves forward by one year in each cycle. Based on the recent pattern, General candidates are typically required to be born on or after October 1 roughly ten years before the exam year, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Criterion 3: Number of Attempts Explained With Examples

This is the criterion students most often misjudge. You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and only in two consecutive years. There is no third attempt under any circumstance, and you cannot skip a year and return.

Criterion 4: Class 12 Appearance Year Rule

You must have appeared in your Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2026 or 2027 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Candidates whose first Class 12 appearance was 2025 or earlier are not eligible, regardless of later attempts.

Criterion 5: Earlier IIT Admission Rule (Who Is Barred)

Candidates who have previously accepted and retained an IIT seat are generally barred from appearing again. This rule stops students from repeatedly taking IIT seats. There are narrow exceptions tied to exactly when and how a seat was accepted, cancelled or withdrawn.

• Barred: those who accepted an IIT seat and retained it beyond the allowed conditions in the past
• Usually still eligible: those who were allotted a seat but did not report or withdrew within the allowed window
• Preparatory course cases: have their own specific rules

Qualifying Percentile Trend: What Got Students Into the Top 2.5 Lakh

The JEE Main percentile needed to enter the top 2.5 lakh is not fixed. It moves with paper difficulty and the number of candidates. The table shows the indicative recent trend for the General category cutoff, which has generally sat in the low-to-mid 93 range.

Category-wise, reserved cutoffs sit lower. As an indicative recent guide, EWS and OBC-NCL have been roughly in the high-70s to low-80s percentile, SC around the low-60s, and ST around the high-40s to low-50s. These move every year, so treat them as direction, not fixed lines.

Does the 75% Board Criteria Apply to JEE Advanced?

This is a common confusion. The 75% rule is not needed to appear for JEE Advanced. It applies at the admission stage, when you take an IIT seat through JoSAA.

Eligibility for Droppers, Second Droppers and Improvement Candidates

Droppers are eligible as long as they satisfy the Class 12 year rule and the two-attempt rule together. The trap is that these two limits can quietly rule out a second dropper.

Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO Candidates

Foreign nationals have a separate route. They are generally not required to write JEE Main and may register directly for JEE Advanced, subject to the other criteria. Their seats are supernumerary, capped at a share of total seats, and they fall outside the category reservation system.
